On 2004-04-28, Slice rated this Callaway X-16 Pro Series w/ Dynamic Gold Stiff a 5...(3548)

Purchase: Found these on sale at LV Discount Golf & Tennis for $550.
Pros: I was playing a set of Taylor Made 200 series irons (reg flex). I'm a shot away from a single digit handicap and wanted some irons with more control and long irons that were more forgiving. After reading reviews on the internet for a couple days I wanted to look at Callaways, Cleveland TA-2's & 6's, and Taylor Made RAC OS & LT's. I went into the store having an idea of what I wanted by the reviews that I read but I let the sales person also give advice. Well, it came down to the TM LT's and the Callaway x-16 ps. Both felt pretty good even though swinging indoors off a mat is nothing like being at the range. I decided to go with the Callaways mostly because of customer service and looks. The first day at the range was a little shocking. I've been working on my swing a little so I was inconsistent. However, when I did hit a solid shot it went straight and far. I gained a little distance over my old irons, but the accuracy is definitely improved. The best part about these irons is how forgiving they are. There is enough feel to know where the club struck the ball. However on bad swings the ball goes straight and only loses 10% of the distance. My TM 200's would lose 20% or more. You can work the ball with minimal effort although I haven't messed with fades and draws that much. It is good to know that the option is there.
Cons: I know that a lot of golfers praise the grips and they are better than most out there. However, I've been using Tour Velvet for the last couple years. I found these grips a little big and rough. I switched them out and now with the smaller grips I'm able to release the club easier.
Quality: Very good! I know Callaway stands by their product so I have no worries about the future with these clubs.

Review Summary: Great clubs for a low to mid handicap. Great distance and accurate. Long irons are easier to hit than most. I would definitely hit any club before buying.
