On 2003-05-20, Jim S. rated this Callaway X-16 Regular Steel Shaft a 5...(1353)

Purchase: I purchased the clubs at a local driving range for the standard retail price of $699.
Pros: I had tried Mizuno, Cobra, Ping, Titleist and narrowed it down to Callaway. Then it was to decide on Big Bertha, the X-14s and the titanium Hawkeye (at over $1,000). I was leaning toward the BBs since they are the most forgiving but had trouble at address since the clubs looked very large. I couldn't feel or see the difference with the Hawkeyes which was good since I didn't want to spend that much money. I've now played the irons twice with great success. The ball almost always goes straight with even mis hits. Before I used to be happy to hit the green, now I am disappointed when i am not close to the pin and boy, do the clubs feel great!
Cons: The clubs look great in my bag. Now I must replace my old driver, 3 wood and putter which will cost me more money, but I am going for it!
Quality: The clubs are solid and very well balanced. In fact, I believe they help my swing. I've always been fairly good with my irons and fairway wood but not good off the tee. However, I began hitting great off the tee after playing with these irons. I think they may have helped my swing. When i got fitted, the pro suggested putting a wrap on the grip to build them up since i have large hands. When i went to get this done, the sales clerk asked what type of grips I wanted. I didn't know i had a choice. I chose the Winn grips which are large and soft and makes swing the club a pleasure.

Review Summary: I question why i waited this long but am happy i did. the x-16s look great, much better than x-14s and more importantly, they play great. i'll post another review after i have played several more rounds. playing in a scramble a couple of weeks ago, i put 3 pw shots within 5 feet of the pin. the other round i played i hit the greens on 3 par 3s and was on the fringe on the other, pin high. I go to sleep dreaming about hitting these irons. A strong buy recommendation.
