On 2005-09-21, Big Ben from MD rated this Callaway Bobby Jones BJ-1 a 5...(6221)
Purchase: I bought this putter used at 2Golf for next to nothing & it's essentially unused. The shaft sticker is completely untouched & there isn't even one mark on the sole or face of the club. Heck, even the white lettering on the grip is still pure white. Considering these clubs sold for well over $100 new I definitely got one helluva bargain!
Pros: Although I'm a right-handed golfer I putt left handed as I'm notably more consistent doing so and it just plain feels more natural for some reason. So, when shopping for a putter it's usually difficult to find something of decent quality for a good price. I had been eyeing up a LH Nike Blue Chip putter a week or so prior and I was amped to go back and get it especially since it was nused (new/used) and the price was fantastic. So when I returned back to the 2Golf store I discovered it had been sold & needless to say I was a bit miffed. After sifting through the dozens and dozens of right-hand putters they had I only found one left-handed putter in the entire bunch: the Callaway Bobby Jones BJ-1. Boy was I surprised when I started putting with it! It may not be the best putter ever conceived, but it's a HUGE step up from the ancient p.o.s. blade putter I had before. It's very solid in build with a light gunmetal-like finish, nicely milled face, stepped double-bend shaft, and stock Callaway pistol grip. It easily stands up in quality & performance to many other hugely expensive botique putters of which I've demo'd many. While it may not have some fancy anodized finish on it or some futuristic design or materials it does what a putter is supposed to do with little fuss. It's also weighted quite nicely. Not too heavy where you have to worry about the ball rocketing across the green and not too light where you have to whack the heck out of it just to get it moving.
Cons: Nothing! It does exactly what a putter is supposed to do.
Quality: It's built as solid as any putter I've tried, looks classic & timeless yet modern, decently sized grip (I have huge hands), and should stand up to many years of use.
Review Summary: There isn't much info out there about the Callaway Bobby Jones series of putters so I didn't know what to think of them at first. Now after owning & using this one for a bit I can say they're definitely worth a look. I got a spectacular deal on mine that I couldn't pass up, but they can still be had on eBay occasionally for reasonable prices. Great quality, looks fantastic, and putts like a charm. It just goes to show that it doesn't have to say Scotty Cameron on it for it to be a good putter. ;)
