Purchase: I've used a Ping putter for the past several years. Never with much luck. I''m a golfer who doesn't believe in changing equipment often. I still have my Taylor-Made Burner 3-wood and 5-wood. Once fitted for the irons and driver, I marry the clubs, through good times and bad, sickness and in health. BUT ... my scores have been creeping from low 80s into the 90s the past few months. When I started charting my rounds, it wasn't just 3-putts, it was missing two- and three-footers. It was to the point where my playing partners were scrapping "gimmes" because I had the yips. And it would carry over to the next hole and thereafter. So, the inevitable divorce from my traditional putter found me spending an hour in the store, looking at putters and studying the 2-ball. I finally gave in and the first time out I played 27 holes. The greens were aerated, but I 2-putted only twice. Carded a 42-41-39. It was remarkable. The first time in a long, long time I felt comfortable with the weight of my putts. Even long putts, I felt comfortable in lagging toward the cup.
Pros: What the 2-ball does is allow you to line up the putt — then focus on the weight. Once your line is set if you keep the stroke smooth, it really makes putting easier and more consistent. After one day on the greens I discovered my problems weren't in the alignment when I used my Ping, it was that I was losing the focus of where I wanted to putt when I would look down, to the cup, then down again. Alignment is the selling point to this club. I like the black-faced 2-ball because it's a little harder, and I don't get to play country-club greens all the time so I want something I can hit a little harder. I had an earlier version of an Odyssey, not a 2-ball, and I hated the feel. This has good balance and really allows you to focus on the weight if you believe in your line.
Cons: It takes time to adjust to the soft feel after using a traditional putter for so long.
But that's the only drawback I can see.
Quality: Very balanced weight, soft insert for better feel on the face. Steel-shaft with a 2-ball alignment to help visualize the target. Classy, unique design.
Review Summary: I didn't "skid" many putts. My rolls were much better. Confidence is key on the course. Alignment is one less thing to worry about when I'm on the green with this putter. We're getting married!
