On 2004-05-03, Need more golf rated this Callaway Forged Plus Wedges a 5...(3582)
Purchase: Purchased 54 and 60 degree chrome models through Australian (Ray Drummond Golf) franchise outlet at around $190AU (approx. $140US). Have just upgraded irons to Callaway X-16 Pro series but did not want cavity back wedges.
Pros: At first I found the positioning of the grooves (nearer to heel than toe) slightly off-putting. Had both Cleveland 900 and Callaway Forged Plus on short list, and from visual perspective leant Cleveland way. A 2 handicap friend working at the store had the Callaway wedges and urged me to go with them despite looks. I eventually was swayed by him and haven't looked back. The sole grind allows infinite variation in shot options, and copes well with all lies. I have found I am able to punch down through the ball with confidence, knowing club will not bounce or snag, and at the same time generate oodles of spin, even to point recently of quickly stopping a ball pitched up a bank to a an elevated very quick green sloping away from me. Result? one bounce, check stop beside pin no more than than 10 feet from point of impact while playing partners were expecting postcards from where they expected the pitch to finish. Cannot recommend these wedges highly enough to anyone wanting a top end traditional style wedge, that will perform under any circumstances I have as yet demanded of it. Have in fact just ordered 48 degree wedge to replace my X-16 standard wedge.
Cons: Only criticism is the highly polished finish which occasionally presents a problem with glare, perhaps vintage finish may have been better choice.
Quality: Quality is first rate as expected with all Callaway products, the True Temper "wedge" shaft and cord grip (less tapered than usual at bottom to allow choking down) combine to make a club as good as any I have seen or used.
Review Summary: If you can justify the expense DO IT NOW. I play only a couple of times a month these days, but am controlling the ball better and pitching the ball with more confidence than 10 years ago when I was playing 2 or 3 times weekly and on 7 handicap (now 10)
