On 2005-07-25, Trevor M rated this Cleveland Launcher 400 8.5 a 5...(5907)
Purchase: I purchased this driver at a private club. I hit it for a round and had to have it! I was playing a Titleist 975D with 8.5 degrees of loft and a dynamic gold x100 shaft at the time and the Cleveland blew it out of the water. I'm talking about 20 to 30 gain in distance here. The $299 for the club was a paltry sum for such gains.
Pros: My average drive went from 280 to almost 300 overnight! Not only is it longer but it is more forgiving too. I can it high or low when I want as well as left or right. It listens very well for such a large and forgiving club. I wouldn't try for more than a 12-15 yard play with the club as it can turn ugly quickly but it should be enough room for most doglegs. You can miss the sweet spot on this thing and it will correct for aim with maybe a 5-10% loss of distance but it will still be in the fairway.
Cons: The stock Fujikara stiff shaft was not vey good. It kicked too low and the tip was softer than I prefer creating a balloning effect on some drives. It also did not seem very consistant in the performance area. I swapped it for an X-stiff Graffaloy Blue and added another 10-15 yards with increased palyability and more consistant launch characteristics. It is now the ultimate driver in my mind. Since adding the new Blue shaft I have won the long drive contest in every scramble I've played in; not only is it long but straight too.
Quality: The club is well constructed; the only problem I've had was a bad shim after the reshaft which twisted the head in the middle of a round but that was quickly repaired at no cost. It has been trouble free since and looks great! Staring down at the large, unadorned crown creates a well of confidence on the tee; you know you are going to bomb it long and straight.
Review Summary: This is the best driver I have evr hit, hands down. I was always skeptical of Cleveland drivers, being that they are primarily a wedge company; but they have a winner in the Launcher 400.
