Purchase: I am in my fourth year of golf. Starting out at age 51 is not unusual, but for many like me , there was always a reason not to play. I didn't have the patients, I was raising a family, I could not afford it. Well, I qualify for all three.
I started out using a set of Square Two irons my neighbor sent to the trash, along with an XPC driver and a Billy Club three wood. With my clubs in hand, I went forth in my new endeavor losing 10 to 12 balls a game. Out here in Pennsylvania, we play on courses that have coal slag for a fairway base. ( Pun intended )
It wasn't to long after , I moved up to a set of K Mart Mac Gregor Battle Sticks and my game was off and running. By the end of the second year I was losing 2 balls a game on average and I was becoming addicted.
At the beginning of my third year, I knew I needed some better equipment if I was going to enjoy the game to my fullest potential. After many books, articles, advertisements, and testing of irons, belonging to my friends and at the various golf shops and stores, I settled on a set of Cleveland TA5 irons. In short it was the most satisfying and improving move of my golf game. The TA-5's were all of what the Cleveland Golf people said they were and more.
I now needed a driver, I was using some fine tight lie type Dunlop fairway woods that worked very well for me at the time, but my XPC driver was not talented enough to do the work of the more modern oversized drivers.
Again I went to the books, the articals, advertisements and also, looked to see who was using what on tour. I tested Calloway, Titleist, Adams, Dunlop as well as Taylor Made and Mizuno. I picked up the Launcher 400 by Cleveland with the Fujikara shaft and it became part of me instantly.
Pros: I was impressed with the feel of the Launcher 400 cc in my hands. It was pleasing to the touch, balanced and easy on the eye, both off the tee box and on.
The moment I made my first ball strike with the Cleveland 400 Launcher,I likened it to slapping my hand against the pavement. Just rock solid on impact and hot off the club face. It was like a rocket propelled ball when I connected to the sweetspot.
I have played it for almost two years now and it is still my favorite, even after I picked up new equipment that has since come on to the market.
I have tried the new 460 cc Launcher that Cleveland golf put on the market this past year and found that it's sheer size is not pleasing at address and makes me feel like I have a bowling ball on the end of the shaft. This,I have felt with many of the other grapefruit class clubs being marketed today and feel that there is no gain from the extra size and that the 400 cc head for me, is the maximum comfort level for the driverin my bag.
Cons: There was nota thing that I could find wrong with this driver. It's color, the shaft, the balance, makes me feel that this Cleveland 400 cc Launcher driver is out to do business everytime I step in to a tee box.
I was well pleased with the stock grips my driver came with but, I am certain that I might consider other grips when the time comes to regrip the driver, but I would also consider it a personal choice for the club owner.
Quality: The Cleveland driver is constructed rock solid, it's famed dampening system works and after 1000 strikes on and off the course, the feel is the same, like a rock!
Review Summary: Bottom line, I paid two hundered dollars for my Launcher 400 on line. A steal at that. It has given me a thousand dollars worth of oohs and awws from many I have played with, but what is most impressive, is that it keeps on giving. I have not grown tired of it, it is responsible for giving me some of the nicest drives I have had ever, whether playing in Pinehurst, or Hawaii Kai.
My recomendation... Pick one up, hit it for while on the range or in the store and then go judge all the others by the Cleveland 400 cc Launcher.
It has imroved my game and I feel certain will improve any golfers game.
