On 2008-06-08, DocT rated this Cleveland HiBore XLS a 5...(8102)

Details: #5 Wood. 19 degree loft. 460cc, Carpenter Custom 455 Face. Inverted crown design. Crown plaque and 'stability foils' to assist alignment at address. Fujikura 43.25' Fit-On M Gold graphite shaft -low-mid kickpoint for increased launch angle. Lamkin grip. Sleaved head cover.

Purchase: Purchased this club from Golfsmith for $179.99 plus tax. I needed a club to bridge the distance gap needed on long par 4 and 5's after the tee shot. I lack distance off the driver, and needed a fairway wood to get me on the green in regulation.
Pros: The XLS fairway wood is a nice club. Swinging the club is easy. At address, the head size looks bigger than your average fairway wood. I guess this instills the mental confidence that you'll hit the ball. Club swing weight is not a problem, and feels like a long iron. Hitting the turf with the sole also isn't a problem. There are no drag effects or much digging if you hit the ball fat. Ball flight is average for a 15 degree 5-wood. Club face is square (non-draw bias), but getting a draw is easy for me. I can't fade it though. Contact with the ball is soft and quiet.
Cons: I really don't like the grip. It seems to be a bit big for my small hands (as a reference, I wear size small golf gloves). I have to choke down to get a comfortable feel at a cost of less distance. I also tend to like corded grips. But this XLS wood doesn't have a corded grip. I'll be changing the grip in the near future.
Quality: The quality of this XLS wood is perfect. From the grip down to the shaft, ferrule, and club head, everything is perfect.

Review Summary: Great club. But then again, it's by Cleveland Golf. Good club for the beginners and amateurs alike. Square face angle might not suit those who fade and need a draw-bias club.
