On 2002-09-23, highendman rated this Cleveland 588 RTG 56 Degree Sand Wedge a 5...(601)

Purchase: I bought my 588 RTG sandwedge from a local golf shop a few years back for about $100. I had been using the 588 chrome finish wedge to good effect for a couple years and thought I might like to try the RTG. I liked the idea of a raw finish -- no glare, more spin.
Pros: This wedge has a heavier head than my standard chrome finish 588. It is not simply the chrome wedge without the finish. Initially, I felt the pricing on the club was unfair, if it was just the 588 without the chrome. That is not the case. The weightier head is really the most significant difference from the chrome version to me. The head also has a more curved lead edge than the chrome. After I adjusted to the heavy head and the look of the leading edge, I really liked them. The added weight allows for a better feel on partial wedge shots to the green. This has allowed me better distance control than my other wedges. I also like the finish of the club after I allowed it to rust up. It may spin the ball a bit more than the standard wedge, but it hasn't been dramatic to me. It doesn't spin the ball as much as my pure spin wedge, for example. The raw finish is nice in that glare from the sun is never a problem.
Cons: It was difficult for me to get used to the look of the more rounded front egde. Also, I was not fond of the added weight of the club, initially. I was used to putting a full swing on my more normal weighted 588 chrome. I got used to the heavy weight though and then liked it. It takes some time or effort to rust the thing up.
Quality: It's a Cleveland wedge -- first rate construction. Raw finish, forged 56 degree sandwedge with a true temper shaft.

Review Summary: This is a great wedge. It's heavy head plows through rough around the green and offers great feel for partial shots. It has impoved my distance control as well. Though not really very pretty, the raw finish is nicely functional in terms of preventing glare and increasing spin. I feel I can nicely control the trajectory of my shots with this wedge. This is the best wedge I have used in terms of promoting confidence and controlling my shots to the pin.
