On 2004-02-29, Tom Bee rated this Cleveland 588 Tour Action Sand Wedge 56* a 5...(2967)

Purchase: I got it at Lewes Golf Club's pro shop in Sussex, England. I got it because I wanted an obviously very good quality sand wedge to replace my old battered wedge. I paid just under £90 for it.
Pros: It is soft, quality feel and feedback. I like its appearance, the way it sits and frames the ball. I like the simplicity of the design. It is very accurate. It is very consistent. It is hard to use but you have to become a better player to use it well. It feels so sweet when you hit it well, and swing hard through the ball. It is unforgiving, a players club. It doesn't have that confusing 'RTG' feature of it's brothers and sisters. It is the simple, standard Cleveland line, I like the chrome finish. It has an understated quality. It is a serious, tour proven performer. With a soft, premium golf ball it is lovely to use, control is amazing, workability is excellent. Makes you want to practice! Very fine from a multitude of ranges. Very adaptable. If you carry one wedge and putt from the fringes like I do, It is still THE ONLY sand iron.
Cons: I don't like the Cleveland logo on the sole. It gets clogged with dirt and is hard to clean. I think that this is a design error. The club is aggressive! It doesn't particularly like very delicate chip shots, a Ping wedge or Callaway forged would prefer those, but the Cleveland is more versatile, it likes longer, full swing pitches. The standard 'Cleveland' grip is horrible. It should be a plain full-cord like other wedge manufacturers have cottoned onto. Not that strange, irregularly score-lined tacky offering.
Quality: It is pristine. A very attractive, subtle, traditional wedge. Understated, the quality lies in the way it plays, and lasts, not in any eyecatching features. The softness and sweetness through the ball screams of quality workmanship. The shaft is ideal. I like the graphics (apart from the awfully placed Cleveland logo).

Review Summary: It is the nicest, most fun wedge I have ever used. I refuse to carry more than one wedge (discounting pitching wedge), and this is the one I have found to be most versatile, best quality and un complicated to stand up on its own. It is sweet and soft. A purists club. I don't like the logo on the sole which I think increases turf drag a little, the grip is horrible, the club is aggressive and doesn't like fiddly little shots much (or I don't)! but I have never come across anything finer in quality.
