On 2005-04-18, Strykker rated this Cobra 400 SZ Tour Pro a 5...(5405)
Purchase: Purchased through local golf liquidator. oh yea the David Feherity hype tossin' a banana to Jason incited me to bite ....the club not the banana i.e....paid $249 Cnd. for demo in mint condition.
Pros: The appearance of the club at address evokes immediate confidence …..400 cc’s of club with a sweet zone of 33.8 square cm. further evokes such confidence. The configuration of the club face mimics that of the Taylor 510 TP ....deep vertical face nicely proportioned to horizontal face….ratio of 2 to 3 respectively.
The factory installed Fujikura Vista Pro 65 shaft is a well balanced combination ….the high kick enables a lower boring flight into the wind …drives averaged 250, 260 into 20 to 30 mph headwind……I increased swingweight from factory specs by by adding two 3 gram strips of lead tape to back heel as this enabled lower and drawing boring ball flight. Without wind conditions to contend with I am certain 300 yards plus would be common.
Cons: Some of the negatives I have read regarding the SZ series are 1. The loud ping on ball contact and 2. The head cover. The loud ping will draw attention ; however unless you are bashful about cranking out 300 plus yard drives the noise should not be a deterrent….. the lead tape I used to alter the swingweight and ball flight dampened the noise somewhat….bottom line it is no big deal and I for one love the sound of pure contact. The head cover is the signature of a great club…why hide it ….the black and gold make a statement ….again I like the head cover.
Quality: Nice eye appealing club, flawless manufacturing details. Believe , believe, believe the .830 COR with the expanded sweet zone at 33.8 square cm. will definitely launch the ball hot off the club face when hit anywhere within the sweet zone i.e. probably 80% of the club face……check out Cobra’s web site for a virtual comparison regarding sweet zone stats. I stated the Fujikura Vista Pro 65 Stiff flex shaft is a good mate for the 400SZ Tour Pro….no need to upgrade or change.
Review Summary: Experience hitting this driver into the wind is a true test to determine it’s capabilities ……if 400 SZ Tour Pro driver performs within or beyond expectations regarding headwind conditions then that outcome impacts my decision to purchase or not to purchase.
