Details: Cobra F Speed LD, 47in. Proto By You Shaft, Stock grip + 2 wraps.
Purchase: I had a '06 Cleveland HiBore. I was looking for a different feel. The HiBore seemed like the head was very rigid. I tried the Taylormade products, but they seemed like the head hit as soft as a sponge. When I tried the Cobra Speed series it felt just right. The Cobra is priced in the middle of the pack at $299 and I had an up charge of $50 for the shaft. The purchase was made from Edwin Watts in Jacksonville, FL. Very good service from this particular location.
Pros: The ball jumps off the club face. First tee shot today was a 507 par 5. My second shot was at 197 to the center of the green. I figure I have an additional 20 yards with this driver. It seems like the club and upgraded shaft are very well balanced and you get ample feedback at impact. Not too much...just right. On another hole, I hit the ball just inside the toe of the clubface. The ball went straight and ended up in the fairway after a 278 yard flight.
Cons: I have mixed feelings of the sound at impact. Yes, it is very...different. I've heard that it sounds like a coke can. I don't agree. The Nike Sumo fits that bill...very tinny. The Cobra sounds more like, well an explosion...powwow. To me, it's confidence inspiring. It doesn't sound like a toy.
Quality: The finish is great. The construction however is still out with the jury. After my round today, I thought I would go to the range and get more practice in. After a quarter bucket of balls, the head sounded like a rattle. I took it back to my retailer, and they said that it sounded like an internal weight had come loose. I asked if this was a problem with the driver and they stated that the club was too new to tell.
Review Summary: I hope this was an isolated incident. The club is very good on off center hits; it feels solid without feeling too hard or too soft. The distance is awe inspiring...just ask the guys I played with today.
