On 2007-05-28, Gary R. rated this Cobra Cobra Speed LD-F a 4...(7778)

Details: 45 inch stock Fuji 55 gr. shaft in stiff flex.

Purchase: Bought my last driver, a Cobra 427 Ti, about 4 years ago, and the combination of getting older/losing a little swing speed--from 110 mph to less than 100-- plus the ongoing advances in the technology made me feel I was ready for new driver. Paid $299%0Aless the $40 Golf Mart in Foster City, CA gave me for my old driver--which was kick-ass in its day.
Pros: The head is really hot, a notable increase in the %22trampoline effect%22 from my 427 Ti, which translated on the Vector launch monitor to a 13 yard increase in distance over my last driver--and this was before I'd even begun to master the new club's subleties. Was originally fitted with a Regular flex. But the 55 gr shaft in regular was too wimpy for my swing. W/club's 2 degree draw bias, couldn't make a full turn without it going left (hooking)--the only club in my bag that did that, and the only regular shaft in the bag. Switched to stiff flex: bingo, no more hook. Very solid feel at contact, mid-high, boring trajectory.
Cons: Unconventionally shaped head looks a little strange. You definitely need a tall tee, and most of the rubber tees at non-grass driving ranges won't be high enough for optimal launch angle.%0A(I now carry my own 3 inch rubber range tee with me in my bag).%0A%0AThis is the LOUDEST driver I have ever heard, not tinny or thuddy, but a solid metallic explosion--which I'm not sure yet whether I like or not.
Quality: Construction seems good, but I've only had the club a couple of weeks.

Review Summary: After liking the club, then being disappointed when I tried to crank it up a notch with the original regular flex shaft, my switch to a stiff flex has me liking the club, and feeling very confident on the tee-box. Have only missed three fairways in the initial two rounds since the shaft switch. Haven't had it long enough to comment on its workability (it seems to want to go straight). But it's definitely long and forgiving and worth checking out if you're in the market for a new big stick.
