On 2006-01-11, S. Fletcher rated this Cobra 3100 i/h Steel Regular a 5...(6593)

Purchase: I bought these used for $270. I had wanted these clubs for a while, every time I tried irons, I gravitated to them. I had found a used set with graphite shafts for $350, but couldn't justify the extra $80, so I bought the steel shafted model.
Pros: First of all, these irons really feel good to me, very soft at impact, very forgiving on mishits (of which I have quite a few). They are forgiving to both my hands and ball flight on mishits. I was playing with some hand-me-down Lynx cavity backs (graphite stiff shafts) that always "stung" my hands on mishits...the Cobras don't do that as much. The steel shafts make them feel "heavier" (definitely heavier in the bag, but I'll live with it) but I think the extra weight is good to slow my swing down and help my tempo a bit, plus the feel of the steel shafts is very nice. I'm hitting these straighter than other irons, maybe because they're 1/2" to 1" shorter than many irons out there. Distances from club to club are consistent, really they're very nice clubs.
Cons: The ONLY thing I have a problem with is that after some serious back injuries, I don't like carrying a bag full of steel shafts for 18 holes...but that's my problem because I didn't want to pay the extra $$$ for graphite. The clubs themselves are totally solid, playable, and feel great.
Quality: Construction seems very very solid, the grips are standard tour velvets, which are nice grips. I've heard that the Nippon Steel shafts used are pretty good, too, but I'm no expert.

Review Summary: These are very good clubs. Easy to hit, forgiving, nice high trajectory, good quality, good price. Even if you can't find them used, the steel shaft model sells for about $450/set, which is less than many other irons. Also, unlike some "game improvement" irons, they look nice and aren't TOO chunky...some other irons that are designed to be "easy to hit" (the cobra 3400, Cleveland Luncher, Adams GT2, Nike slingshot) are REALLY chunky, which can make the short irons a little less playable, in my opinion. These are a good compromise of ease and performance, bear in mind that this is coming from someone who shoots in the 90s, however, so mileage may vary for better golfers. I think they're great irons.
