On 2004-07-13, J. Wilson rated this Cobra SSi Irons w/ Graphite Stiff a 5...(3872)

Purchase: I am an 8 handicap and am 6'2" tall. My Titleist 981 were standard length. I went to a pro due to some iron inconsistency and ended up getting fitted. I hit just about every brand available and the Cobra tested out the best. Mine are nearly 2" longer than standard and are adjusted in loft for my game. I paid a little over $500 including the fitting and lesson at a local pro shop.
Pros: The clubs are solid in feel and have a great deal of feedback. When you address the ball you get the idea that the ball is so small and the face of th club is so large you cannot possibly miss your shot. The graphite shafts are made for Cobra by Aldila and are top shelf. The weight of the clubs lends to a smooth swing. The heads weigh more than my old 981's and seem to make it easier to make an effortless swing.
Cons: Because of the size of the head it is a little more difficult to work the ball. My normal flight is right to left, slight draw. On occassion we all need to work the ball a little from left to right. These clubs, while EXTREMELY forgiving, aren't as workable as clubs more suited for low cappers. I also noted that the ball flight is definitely much higher. This can work both for and against you. It helps you to land the ball softly onto the greens with little if any release and roll. But you do lose a little distance. I used to hit my 7 about 155 to 160. I am hitting the Cobras, on average, about 5 yards less. But I personally would take accuracy over length every time.
Quality: Extremely high quality. I ordered mine with custom grips and thus they are truly "mine". This alone builds the confidence. Overall they are a really good looking set and are fun to play. I believe I made the right choice.

Review Summary: Be sure to get fit for your set. I was amazed to find out how "off" my Titleist were for my game. If you are going to invest into your game, why not go out and get a pro to evaluate your needs, fit you properly, and truly improve your game. As for the Cobra SSi's; they are an awesome set. While those with a 4 handicap might scoff at these, I eagerly look forward to that next iron shot. They are big, easy to strike, and extremely forgiving. There is also lots of feedback from the clubs which is something even low cappers like.
