On 2008-10-15, DON rated this Golfsmith Groove Cutting Tool a 2...(8193)

Details: I purchased the groove cutting tool with a six sided cutter. Item # 8287, cost is $26.99

Purchase: I got this tool at Golfsmith to sharpen the grooves on my irons. Wanted to see how much it helps to spin the ball more, especially with wedges.
Pros: The cutter is carbide, so it should last a very long time, especially since it's a 6 sided cutter head. 3 sides are for V grooves, and 3 are for Square grooves. There is not doubt about if it will give you more spin. I tried it out first on an old forged 62* wedge. Lots of spin even with cheap 2 piece range balls.
Cons: A couple things you need to know about the tool and it's use. First thing is it's not EASY to use. I'm a machinist, and I work with tools for a living. And I can tell you it's not easy to re-cut the grooves on an iron with this tool. If you have hard chromed forge irons it's especiall not easy, as the hard chrome if very hard to cut. Second thing is the size of the cutter. The legal limit for the width of a groove is .o30'. The cutter is exactly the same .030' width. After using the cutter on the forged wedge, I tried it again on a stainless steel cast 9 irons as a test. I cut the grooves very carefully, and measured them. Before I cut them they measured the legal limit of .030'. After cutting them I measued then and they were up to .035'. This means the 9 iron in no long legal for use in any USGA event.
Quality: Quality is very good.

Review Summary: If you want sharper grooves for more spin, this tool will give you what you are looking for. But at a price. It's not easy to use, and it will make the groove oversize. I'd be willing to bet that most amatuer golfers would screw up more irons using this tool then they would get right. If having a legal club matter to you, I wouldn't recommend you use this tool. I plan to try it a few more times on some old heads before I decide if I can get it to work better or not. Right now it's not going to be used on a set of good irons. If you do use this tool, expect to remove a lot of cover material off your ball with each swing. I filled 3 grooves with yellow plastic when I was hiting range balls with the 62* wedge. Ball life will be very short.
