On 2008-10-11, DON rated this Golfsmith SnakeEyes, 655TJ a 5...(8186)

Details: 9.5* loft, 460CC titanium driver. HOt DAT600C face. Black crown.

Purchase: I got this driver head at Golfsmith on sale for $59, marked down from $110. I have a smaller version of ths head, a 420CC model, that I really like a lot. It's very long due to the hot face, and I was thinking a 460CC version with the same face might be nice.
Pros: One nice thing about Golfsmith club heads is they tell you what material the body and face are made of, so you can pick and choice what you like. I know that DAT600C is one of the hottest face materials available, so I got this head. The face height is 57MM, which is pretty tall, just a little more roon for error off the tee. Impact is very solid, very quiet. As I expected, this driver doesn't mess around in terms of distance, it's long. It came with a LOW rating for workability, MAX for forgiveness, and MID for trajectory. I have a few drivers that are easy to work, so I decided to try one with MAX forgiveness and see if I could work it or not. No lose if I couldn't. As it turns out, this driver is pretty good in terms of forgiveness, and not too bad in terms of workability. Distance is right out there with the best of them.
Cons: Wouldn't mind if I could work the ball a little more, but I'm happy with what I can do with this driver. Could use an alignment mark on the crown, but that's not too hard to correct with a litle white paint. The head has an emblem on the sole with the model number. Turns out they fall off on a regular basis, and I lost the one from this head the first day I hit balls at the range. No big deal, but annoying.
Quality: Guality is first rate, other than said emblem falling off. The face is DAT600C, which is very hot for long distance. Body is 6-4 Titanium, pretty much the standard for good drivers. Solid construction and very nice paint job and finish.

Review Summary: This head is exactly what I was expecting after playing it's smaller brother 4 years ago. It's very long, it's forgiving , and it's not too hard to work the ball side to side. It's a 9.5* head, so I wasn't expecting a high ball flight, but it's not too low. With the right shaft, it's pretty close to being perfect. Only other loft is 11.5*s, so you don't get much choice with this one. Overall, I'd have to say this driver will keep up the the big dogs from any of the big OEMs. If you don't like the loud crack with some of the new drivers, this one is for you, it's very quiet, so quiet I somethings wonder if I missed the ball.

Tour players forced to mingle ... and don't like it - I’ve said this before and probably will say it many, many more times.
