On 2003-01-10, Ken Slattery rated this Golfsmith Stinger Titanium Plus a 5...(896)
Purchase: Head, shaft and grip were ordered from Golfsmith's on-line catalogue and assembled at home. This was a Golfsmith special offer that included the Killer Bee Bullwhip II shaft at no extra charge when the Driver head was purchased for $64.50. This special is still being offered as of 1/10/03 and is an outstanding value for a jumbo Titanium head (420 cc) and graphite shaft. I added a Golf Pride Whisper Grip for about $3.00. Total cost was about $75 with shipping.
Pros: The driver hits the ball at a medium launch angle and is as long as other quality drivers I have used. However, at least for my swing, it is very forgiving and accurate. At the driving range I visit, there is a green at 250 yards out. I rarely hit a drive that is more than a few yards either side of that green and most go right through the green and keep going. This driver has the least variable results of any driver I have used. In the past I have used a three wood off the tee quite a bit. I actually think I am more accurate with this driver and certainly longer. The large face is pretty hard to miss and even off-center hits get out there pretty well and straight. I've also found it to be quite workable both left and right. I am way up in fairways hit since getting this driver.
Cons: The head only comes in a 10 degree loft, which is just what I wanted, but may not suit others. It is also made in right handed only.
I've gotten used to it but some may not like the fairly loud report the head makes when it strikes the ball. That is fairly common with large titanium heads.
Also, its only available as a component, so you have to assemble it yourself, but you save some a lot of money in doing so.
Quality: The titanium head appears to be of high quality and is well finished in a dark grey. I have hit it quite a few times at the range and golf course and it shows virtually no wear. I am very impressed with the quality of the head, particularly for the bargain price. I initially had some doubts about the shaft, it being a relatively inexpensive shaft by today's standards. However, I must say it has been more than satisfactory.
Review Summary: Anyone looking for a quality jumbo Titanium driver should take a look at this unit, especially if you are on a budget and are a little handy with tools. Even without the free shaft, it is an excellent value. With the shaft thrown in, it is a superlative value.
