On 2004-04-28, DON rated this Golfsmith Snake Eyes TiSteel 3 Wood a 5...(3553)

Purchase: I purchased the head from Golfsmiths for $39.95 and a Rifle 65 stiff graphite shaft for $29.95. I purchased the Snake Eyes head because I was looking for a 3 wood with a larger head to use off of the tee. I chose the Rifle 65 shaft because I have had good results with them in the past. I added a Lamkin Crossline grip to finish the club as that is what I have on my other clubs and they work well for me.
Pros: The first ball I hit with the 3 wood went right down the middle of the fairway and all but one ball I hit all day followed the first one. This is the best I have ever done with a 3 wood. The extra height of the Snake Eyes club face makes it much easier to hit. The 3 wood I had been using was fine off the grass but I had less confidence in it off of the tee. Now I feel that I can hit the ball off the grass or off the tee with equal ease. Distance off the tee is about the same as my old 3 wood, but I am closer to the center of the fairway now.
Cons: Nothing to complain about so far.
Quality: The Snake Eyes TiSteel head is quite attractive in appearance and looks well made. The TiSteel head has a Maraging Steel face for good distance. Maraging steel is one of the hardest steels used for golf clubs and provides for long carry distances and should last for ever. The Rifle shaft matches the head very well.

Review Summary: My only complaint is that I didn't build this club sooner. It allows me to hit more fairways than I would have with my old 3 wood. When a driver is not the best choice off the tee, I now have a 3 wood with a large enough head to give me the confidence to split the fairway. Before this, I used my 7 wood for short par fours because it too had a large face. Now I have a choice. 3 wood if I want more distance, or the 7 wood if I only need about 200 yards off the tee. Either way, I'm in the fairway with only a mid to short iron to the green.
