Details: heel shaft, blade-style, 35'
Purchase: Getting serious about this game meant getting serious about my scores, which required getting serious about my putting. Having played with blades until now, I saw no reason to change, but was seeking a more consistant feel to my putting. Enter the Heavy Putter. I was introduced to it by one of the pros at the Griffith Park golf shop. He was using one, and said he really liked it. I was looking for more weight... but was suprised when I first held the Heavy Putter; the name really fits! I demoed it, liked it, and bought it. Paid a golf shop price around $200, but I wanted it now. You can save $30-$40 buying one online or on eBay.
Pros: This putter just 'feels good' to me. It feels very solid, and the heavier head mass provides a softer feel by dampening vibration at impact. The tendency when first using this putter is to leave your putt short, oddly enough, because the weight makes you think you're going to hit it too far. Once you realize you can use your normal stroke, and let the Heavy Putter technology do what it was designed for; you simply use a smooth pendulum stroke, and in my case, find yourself lagging better than ever, and the 3 footers become mindless.
The Heavy Putter really does take your small muscles out of the mix, and really engages your shoulder muscles, which leads to a more consistant motion. And because this putter weighs in around 2lbs., if you practice enough with it (which we should all be doing anyway) you can save money by canceling your gym membership! Who needs to lift weights when you own a Heavy Putter? Plus, it makes a great conversation starter on the course when playing with strangers. Even if they speak a different language, just hand them your Heavy Putter and watch the surprise and smiles as they adjust what they feel to what they 'expected...'
Cons: The only thing I wish this putter provided more of, and the mallet styles offer more than the blade, is a better guide. The blade style offers a half-ball guide that is ok, but I would like something a little more distinct. Not that I couldn't modify this myself, if I found it truly lacking. It's basically fine.
Quality: The construction of this putter is extremely solid. It has a high-quality feel, looks well-made, and I often have people ask me about the putter before they even realize there's anything special about the weight. It just looks like a quality club.
Review Summary: In summary, I would have to say I would find it difficult to go back to a lighter putter; I just love the weight, and the increased stability of my stroke has given me a confidence that I never had with my putting. If you have a chance to demo one, by all means give it a shot. It takes a while to get used to, several weeks in my case, but once you do, it reduces the motions of your putting stroke, which means less room for error, which is a great thing with any of your clubs, but especially your putter.
