On 2002-09-27, Mike "Sargemo" Morrissey rated this Hippo Giant Hippo Driver a 4...(616)
Purchase: I was hitting my old Cobra driver as good as I thought I could hit any driver. Accuracy was sometimes lacking, but it wasn't unusual to hit it 300 yards. Then I went on a golf trip with some friends and had a chance to try the Giant Hippo, or as it was more commonly referred to, the "Volkswagon". On the practice range it only took 3 drives before I felt comfortable addressing the ball and seeing 400cc of club in front of me. Once I figured out the right tee height (much higher than I needed with my Cobra) I was in the 330-350 yard range. I still wasn't convinced I needed it until I borrowed it from my friend on the 18th hole of a 3 person scramble. Our best measurement put the drive at 355 yards, and straight as an arrow!! That's when I said I had to have one of these "Volkswagons" for myself!
Three days later I took my wife out to lunch on her birthday at the diner of her choice. On our way home I made a detour into my favorite golf shop to see if they had any Giant Hippo drivers available. As luck would have it, one was available after the person who put a hold on it failed to show up. Destiny? Maybe, but it's mine now. So on my wifes' birthday I get a new driver...do I have a great wife or what?
I also got a sweet sweet deal on the club. Because I'm a frequent buyer at this shop, it cost me only $79.
Pros: Needless to say the distance I am able to hit the ball. But more importantly is the accuracy. I would give up all of the distance I gained for the accuracy alone. The extra 50 yards is an added bonus.
Cons: Probably the 'clang' of the ball off the face. It sounds dead, but when you look up your ball is cruising at mach 2.
Quality: My friends have had theirs for months and have only positive things to say about the Giant Hippo. I've had mine two days, and have only hit it at the range. So far it seems like a well constructed club. My Cobra will be collecting dust, and I spent a lot more on that club.
Review Summary: The 400cc head can definitly be a first impression turn-off. I would urge anyone that is the least bit curious about hitting a large head driver, try the Giant Hippo. Grip it and rip it, and find out for yourself what a great tool it is.
