Purchase: I bought this driver from Garforth Driving range about 12 months ago. I paid about £50 for it as a new club. Perhaps like many other golfers out there, I just fancied a change of club. My Current driver at that time was a Mizuno t-zoid c-face forged titanium 10degree, fitted with a stiff proforce 75. I fancied something bigger and newer.
Pros: The giant plus has a large yet traditional shaped head, and when suited with a good quality shaft it gives a good ball flight, carry and distance. I have s swing speed of about 105mph and decided to have a graffalloy prolite 35, stiff fitted. It works very well, giving good dispersion control, feedback and ultimately better scores. Distance is good and I have regularly driven some of the shorter par 4s, 300-320 yards etc. It brings a smile!
Cons: The only dis-like is the origional shaft which does not have sufficient torque control, leading a wide dispersion of shots.
In fitting a new shaft you need to get the right shaft weight, mid-high kick point, shaft length (I'm using 45+3/4") and correct grip weight to ensure a well ballanced club. The origional Stiff Hippo shaft was 82g I think, and the origional grip was very spongey and light weight, about 35g.
Quality: Shaft quality is not so good! However, I have no complaints about the club head. Yeh! the paint is quite bright and you'll either love it or hate it, however it is quite resiliant to scratches and chips etc. (Unlike such as the Wilson deep red's, which look good new, however often look scabby as second hand.) NO complaints about the Hippo though!
Review Summary: Good quality club. If you want consistency get the shaft upgraded (£50ish). Currently selling at about £40 in the UK and with a good swing they keep up with pretty much anything on the market. Alternatively you could spend £300 on a big name and perhaps get £120 back when you get bored of it, as us honest golfers do every other year.
Use your money wisely and buy a Hippo!
