Purchase: I have played muscle back (blade) irons for the past 6 years. The set I played was manufactured by a well respected OEM. I really wasn't in the market for a new set of irons, but my son's golf instructor convinced me (after repeated begging) to try his set of KZG's. I always hit balls while my son gets a lesson. This particular night, the instructor brought his 6 iron over and placed it in my hands after wrestling me to the ground. I hit several balls with this club and absolutly fell in love with it. I had him build a set for me the very next day after analizing my swing. The set was built with True Temper Dynamic Gold w/Sensicore S-300 shafts, tipped 1/2" less than standard while maintaining a 1/2" longer than standard length. The price was $600.00. I have used the KZG's all summer and have enjoyed every round.
Pros: These irons are more forgiving than my previous set. Miss hits don't penalize me as much or feel as harsh as my old set. Toe and heel mishits seem to fly further and straighter with the KZG's.The solid shots (as with all quality muscle backs) are very soft and responsive. In my opinion, a well hit shot with a soft carbon steel muscle back just feels softer, smoother and more solid than with a cavity back. These are definatly no exception. The workability with these irons is exceptional. If you have the ability to manufacture a variety of shots, these irons will easily allow you to do so. Around the greens, I find it easier to hit delicate shots with irons that have a more narrow sole. At some point, I have either played with or demoed on the range, every OEM muscle back available. These KZG irons are as good as any and less expensive. In some cases, dramitically less expensive.
Cons: Nothing really. I guess if there is a down side, it would be the reduced forgiveness compared to cavity backs. Honestly, this is marginal if you are a descent ball striker. If you have the time to play and practice a reasonable amount, I believe muscle back irons will actually improve your game.
Quality: The finish is flawless. Chromed muscle back irons are a thing of beauty. One thing I like that KZG did with these irons, is not painting the logo or numbers. With chromed heads, the paint wears of extremly easily anyway. The chrome finish has held up very well. There are minor scratches on the sole but not much else.
Review Summary: If you are considering a set of muscle back's, try these before you shell out $800.00 to $1200.00 for a set of name brands. Also, I really believe there are many players out there that are capable of using muscle backs. They are not as difficult to hit as some people lead you to believe.
