On 2007-05-24, Matt in SF rated this KZG U-Iron a 4...(7774)
Details: KZG's U-Iron, 22 degrees of loft, with Grafalloy Blue shaft.
Purchase: Picked the club up at Bay Golf in Burlingame, Califoria. Bay Golf is a custom fitter specializing in KZG components. I purchased a few drivers from them, and the owner, Matt Coe, offered me the KZG U-Iron to try. It stayed in the bag.
Pros: The head is different looking, but good looking at set up. It's longer heel to toe than other iron woods on the market, helping off the tee and the fairway. It has a terrific midnight black finish (much like all KZG products), maraging steel face that is very, very hot, plus sounds and feels terrific, and can be lie adjusted by up to 4 degrees one way or the other which I believe is unique for a hybrid style wood. It offers a high ball flight with a lot of spin, which is perfect for me as I acquired the club for long par 3's primarily. The Grafalloy Blue shaft works well with the head, promoting a higher ball flight.
Cons: The only negative I can find is that if you don't get the swingweight right, the heel shots are rough. Low squirts to the right. But, this is fixable if you focus on adding a little weight on the head with lead tape, or lighten your grip weight, finding that your subsequent shots will hit the center of the face more and you'll be on your way. I would also recommend another option if you hook the ball more than slice as the backweighting of this head promotes right to left shots.
Quality: KZG delivers a beautiful product. The maraging steel face is terrific. The finish is perfect.
Review Summary: If you're more of an iron wood type vs hybrids that resemble small fairway woods, this is a great option.
