On 2003-06-06, Budelmjt rated this La Jolla Knife 5 / 7 Woods w/ Grafalloy Prolite Reg Shafts a 5...(1469)

Purchase: I bought the 7 wood at my proshop, ordered the 5 wood to match the seven wood. I make clubs and was interested in the Knife design. I tried the 7 wood out and really liked it. The 7 wood was a "special" deal ( I cannot reveal the price), but the 5 is still TBD, but I expect with my member discount it will be about $160 - 170.
Pros: It flies the ball further and straighter from the fairway (or rough). I need to go back and put midsize grips on mine, but like the way the head responds to the turf. One drawback is that I tend to hook these from a teed ball. The "rudders" must correct this tendency on the fiarway hits. This club tends to hit it further than my other 7 woods 175 - 195, instead of 170 - 190), and I have to force myself to remember that. I have to set it up looking a little open when the ball is teed. This is likely a reflection on my swing, rather than on the club. I can hit the 5 wood up to 225 from a tee, when slinging a hook around a dogleg, but a well controlled swing will go about a 185 - 190 distance with ease. I really like these clubs.
Cons: The only drawback (not much of one, though) is the small head. I have not had this problem yet, but a ball teed up in the rough may have a tendency to go under the ball. So far, this has not been a problem. I wanted a Proforce 65 ATR shaft to match my 3 wood (I built the 3 wood with a Hypersonic 15 degree head), but it was not an option. The Prolite is my second choice in shafts.
Quality: You can get the club with a variety of shafts. The clubs are very well constructed. My 7 wood came with a nice Lamkin Crossline grip, which I have been loth to tear off for the midsize grip I need, because it feels so nice.

Review Summary: My handicap is currently 8, and varies from 4-5 in mid summer to 8-9 in winter. I am 57 years old, and have been losing distance for several years. Thes clubs let me get on the green and stop (they stop very well, they fly high when I want them to, or low and driving, when I want them to). I could never get long irons to fly that high with any consistency, with my swing. These are terrific golf clubs.
