On 2005-03-02, Garp rated this Lovett 59 Degree SW a 5...(5110)

Purchase: I purchased this unit off Ebay for $90 (including shipping).
Pros: I took a wedge lesson once from a teaching pro at Primm Valley (NV). In hitting sand shots, he said the main goal is to get out of the sand, anything better than that is gravy. Despite its unconventional looks, the Lovett SW will do exactly that. The day I got the club I went out and dumped a 100 shag balls into the trap. Some I was able to get close to the in, even holed a couple, others were a little long or a little short, some way long or short, but I was 100-for-a-100 in getting them out. I have never been comfortable in playing out of traps, but with this wedge I now at least have confidence that when I hit it into the sand, I won't be making an afternoon of it in trying to get it out.
Cons: Frankly, it's a pretty weird looking club. I'm a good golfer, carrying a 2 handicap, and it's a little embarassing walking around with this monstrocity in the bag, but it works. I can put up with a lot of grief from my buddies as long as it works. I'm a little concerned how this club will perform when the fairways dry out a little bit. In early March everything is very damp, allows for the super high bounce of the club to slide nicely under the ball and into the ground. I'm curious what will happen when the ground hardens up a little bit. I also wish they made a Lovett in the 54-55 degree range. They make a 50, 59 & 64. I would be very interested in something to bridge the gap between the 50 & 59.
Quality: Golf Pride grip is terrific. Everything seems solid about the construction.

Review Summary: I'm not a big infomercial guy. I don't have a Hammer in my bag cause some guy in a mullet can drive his ball over a mountain. I don't wear a balance bracelet, or swing a customized broom stick, but this Lovett wedge is the real deal. In addition to a sure-out from the traps, this is also a terrific club from 70 yards and in. The incredibly high trajectory allows me to drop shot after shot right next to the pin. If I stepped on it I could, with a little tail wind, hit the ball 100 yards. I've never seen a ball of mine go so high. Pretty cool. It also is terrific out of the rough. In hitting shag balls I purposefully gave myself bad lies, sometimes even stomping my ball down. Each time I was able to get the club under the ball with a nice flight toward the green. I know that top of the line equipment is generally not sold with same marking strategy as knives and fatless cookers, but hey, if it works, it works. The Lovett wedge works.
