On 2006-05-10, CharP rated this MacGregor VFoil Eye-O-Matic M42 a 5...(6910)

Details: 9 degrees of loft, OEM Graphite Design YS-6.1 graphite shaft, stiff flex

Purchase: Paid $50 on EBay brand new with headcover.
Pros: I like the fact that although the clubhead is moderately large (420cc), MacGregor decided not to go with a closed clubface, which is the usual with the bigger drivers. In fact, MacGregor's website says that the face is actually 1 degree open, though it appears neutral at address. For me, this gives me confidence that if I make a good swing, the results will be truer and not artificially enhanced. As you will read in other reviews, the sound produced by good contact is definitely loud, but not obnoxiously so. It doesn't sound cheap at all. I see it as a plus- you know instantly when you've hit the sweet spot and the resulting distance and accuracy match the sound. It will get you attention, so if you're the quiet type, it might bother you. Speaking of distance, this club gives me good distance. I don't hit the ball a ton, and I don't really try to. I'm more of a finesse, play-from-the-short-grass type of player, and this driver gives me what I really look for: predictability. When I hit it well, I split the fairway and get good roll out. On mis-hits, I can feel it, hear it, and know where the balls headed before I even pick it up mid-flight. This just a simple, no-nonsense type of club. I also love the matching headcover: a beautiful white leather with black and red embroidered logo, with a nice zippered closure which prevents having to struggle pulling a sock style over a head this size. Nice touch.
Cons: No complaints.
Quality: Clubhead is aesthetically pleasing, well-made, and takes a good beating without showing signs of it. Graphite Design is an underrated shaft maker and the YS-6.1 shaft is a steady performer. The well-made headcover is icing on the cake.

Review Summary: This is a great, no-nonsense, last-generation driver from a company thats quickly returning to the forefront of the golf scene with good products. And it can be had for a song these days, if you can find it. Great bang for the buck!
