On 2005-05-31, Bob Little rated this MacGregor 1025M Steel Stiff Truetemper Gold a 5...(5584)

Purchase: I offered my irons and $100 cash to my son for his 18th birthday, or I could have a set of cavity back Walter Hagens made just like them. He took my clubs and the cash. Big surprise. Believing that the missing element in my game, at a steady 8 handicap for sometime now, I wanted to find an affordable forged blade. After finding a demo set with onlly a few left of the 1025M at a national chain store, I felt that I had to have these irons. Without even hitting a shot, I knew that a club that felt that good in my hands would inspire confidence from tee to green. I had to surf the Internet for several days, but I landed a set from EdwingWattsGolf.com and there are worth more than the $399 they required! I have never felt so comfortable or confident with an iron in my hands. Over the last 30 years, I've played Ben Hogan, Titleist, Wilson Staff and most recently, my son's Walter Hagen irons. They've all served me well for a time. My goal is to drop my '8' to a '2', what my father played at his very best. I believe these are the clubs that can get me there. In five rounds played, I could count the missed hits on one hand. But, more importantly, when I swing within myself, I'm throwing darts at the pin.
Pros: The feedback is remarkable. I know where I made contact, without looking at the face. The pure shots I've hit come off clean and effortlessly. Soft is not an exaggeration with these.
Cons: nothing
Quality: superb construction with absolute consistency from 3 to PW.

Review Summary: Why MacGregor felt it necessary to discontinue these marvelous irons is beyond me. I haven't hit their replacement, but I think this is another New Coke, Classic Coke scenario. MacGregor, please hold onto a spare set for me. If they're ever last or stolen, I want the same feel I've just discovered!
