On 2007-01-07, K. Clark rated this MacGregor M565 a 5...(7577)
Details: Rifle Flighted lite 5.5 shafts, plus 1/2 inch.
Purchase: Was looking to try a forged iron. I had some old sentimental favorites from my early introduction to golf - Old McGregors, so I looked to MacGregor. Bought a set on Ebay - paid about $375 4 - PW.
Pros: Beautiful Irons. Moderately wide sole, but not too bulky. Pretty clean lines for a club with 'game improvement' features. Minimal offset was a requirement - these have just that. I was hitting a 7 iron about 150 - now use 8 for that distance. I can hit my 6 180yds even. On some clubs I gained about 10 yds, the longer clubs I gained about 15 (4,5,6). May be the shafts. Flighted means the bend point varies as the length increases. Maybe it's just me... I've gotten stronger as I've gotten older???...sure buddy, definetly the shafts and the technology. Missed hits, as rare as those are for all of us, still get great distance. I once read you could not 'work' these clubs, but I closed the face a little on a 7 iron yesterday and curved it around a tree to a green 150 yds away... I impressed the hell out of myself to say the least.
Cons: This is unfair, but, I want it all!!! The softness of a forged iron will dent, ding and scratch far easier than stainless cast clubs(that's why they refer to them as soft!). I believe it's worth it to have the forged clubs, be prepared, don't freak out the first time you clip something hard. The sole does a very good job of resisting scratches from sand. As long as you just hit golf balls and grass - they'll be fine.
Texas municiple courses don't always give you that option.
Quality: Finish, fit, all top quality. Face has satin finish that also transitions to the top line to reduce any glare. Polished on sole, toe and hosel - nice look. Shafts are very nice as well. Composite insert in cavity is attractive, possibly helps dampen vibration - they're forged and already feel nice, so...hard to say. Stock grips were nice - down right fancy with littel 'V' button in end cap. MacGregor is (wether they like it or not) 'old school'. That means quality and class to me.
Review Summary: I used to shoot from 92 - 86 ( see 'plays once a week')These irons helped me get into the 70's for the first time. I've shot 4 over - once. 6 - 9 over several times since buying these clubs. Used to be an 82 was a great day. Now, I'm looking for a mid/low 70's day to make me happy. These clubs can make it happen (practice helps a little too). Hmmm, sounds like I just said these clubs have caused me to become dissatisfied with my game... that's golf in general - no fault of MacGregor. We pay money to take part in this mental abuse? I love golf.
