On 2004-02-21, Mathew rated this MacGregor V-Foil 1025M a 3...(2899)
Purchase: Purchased new at my country club pro shop, paid $799. My 20 year old Orlimar blades had been regrooved too many times, they simply were beyond repair. I had demoed several forged blades and even a few cavity backs but chose the MacGregors in part because I grew up playing MacGregor blades and Orlimar had long since discontinued their gorgeous blades.
Pros: Very versatile irons from most any lie. The thin sole and leading edge allows one to really pick the ball from fluffy lies, fairway bunkers, divots, you name it. The small-mid size head tracks beautifully through dense rough. Very soft carbon steel delivers that great traditional feel forged blades are known for. Grooves delivery good spin but do not shred soft cover type balls like several modern clubs are known for. Nice thin topline provides great visual appeal and alignment at address. More forgiving on heel/toe misses than my Orlimars and most muscleback irons.
Cons: Quality control at MacGregor is sorely lacking. My clubs were special order with Rifle 6.9 shafts. My 1st round had me guessing on club selection as my normal 12yd/club gaps were not holding true. I struggled hitting the 3 iron, everything was very long and left pull-hook. I was hitting my 3 iron at least as long as my 2 (an Orlimar blade that was still very servicable with X100 shaft). The 4 iron felt normal, workable with 205yd carry. The 5 iron was at least as long as 4 iron, but I was pulling it as well. I exitted course after 9 holes due to frustration and headed for proshop where they have a frequency tester. Upon testing several clubs, the swingweights were very inconsistent D3-E1 as were frequencies. The 3 iron flexed to 6.0, the 5 iron was similar while the 4 was stiffest at 7.2 and the balance of clubs were somewhere in between. The lie angles were even inconsistent (I spec'd +1/2", 2*up). I waited nearly 6 weeks for these "custom" clubs to arrive yet the results were far less than "custom". To MacGregor's credit a partial credit was granted and clubs were rebuilt using ProjectX shafts, 7.0 flex, swingweighted, etc. After repairs, the clubs are superb with exception of their workability. These are not quite as workable, particularly on fades, as my Orlimars and in fact most blades, ime. They're still better than any cavity back. I would consider these among the most forgiving blades I've ever used, sort of a hybrid blade-cb.
Quality: See above. Quality control is poor. Ferrule installation was also subpar. All of this was corrected when clubs were rebuilt by local builder. Given the cost and wait time, it should have been done correctly the 1st time around. My cc proshop is now rechecking all specs on any MacGregor clubs before they are sold and has apparently found similar problems with other sets.
Review Summary: Nice balance of forgiveness and feel in a blade. I would prefer a bit more workability, even if it cost me forgiveness on mishits. Superb versatility from any lie. MacGregor would have a real winner on their hands if they could improve quality control. Until such time, I'd suggest folks look elsewhere or have specs checked very carefully prior to purchase.
