On 2004-08-08, Dick Walden rated this Matzie ASSIST Swing Trainer a 5...(4000)

Purchase: I first became acquainted with the Matzie ASSIST over thirty years ago, and I have used it sporadically ever since. It was recommended to me by Conrad Rehling, PGA, to help young golfers become familiar with an orthodox grip and a proper, natural release through the ball. I recently purchasede another one directly from Matzie for $70 as a gift for a friend whose formerly classic swing has become "short and quick" with age.
Pros: The ASSIST immediately helped me with my tempo, and I have used it more frequently as I have grown older (I'm now 57 and my handicap fluctuates between 5 & 9). Gene Sarazen often said that swinging a heavy club every day prolonged his effectiveness. Swinging the ASSIST helps me pause at the top, and grooves the feeling of an unhurried and unforced "late release." It reminds me to extend through the ball, and to finish with my hands high, not yanked across the body, which results, for me, in either a pull-hook or a heeled squirty slice. Compared with most of my contemporaries, my swing is long and flowing and I haven't lost any distance off the tee over the years.
Cons: I originally thought the molded grip was a bit "too strong," i.e. the right hand was positioned a bit too much under the shaft, but experience and some instruction persuaded me that my own grip was "weak" and would benefit from a minor adjustment. This proved to be true. If a purchaser doesn't like the grip, perhaps a pro should be consulted. In any case, if the purchaser doesn't want to get in to changing his or her grip, it's easy enough top have a regular grip put on!
Quality: The ASSIST I use now is over 20 years old. The grip is in great shape--no cracks or anything. The unit is indestructable. There are no hinges or weak points. You'd have to go out of your way to break the thing.

Review Summary: This is an oldie but a goodie. Used on a regular basis, it will keep the muscles limber, build strength, and promote good swing path and tempo. If I'm going out to play, I'll swing it a few times after I stretch, but generally I like to swing it in the evenings after some chipping and pitching around the yard. It sure beats those weighted rings or headcovers.
