On 2003-05-24, highendman rated this Maxfli D-Tech Extra Straight Distance a 3...(1396)
Purchase: While browsing at Dick's Sporting Goods with the intention of spending $50 in order to use my $10 coupon, I looked over the new ball offerings. One of the ones that caught my eye was Maxfli -- a brand which I've found has produced some excellent balls in the past. In fact their XS Distance ball has been my favorite, when I really wanted to bust one. The D-Tech Straight Distance is the apparent replacement for that ball (though less expensive than the XS Tour originally sold for). I paid $15.99 for a 15 pack.
Pros: The ball does what is claimed -- it offers straight distance. It seems to go about as far as distance balls go and offers a low spin, moderate to high rock like trajectory. Like the Wilson Straight distance, it will spin off line less than any spin ball. compared to a typical spin ball, these will offer signifiacantly more distance off both the woods and irons and you will find more fairways as well. for example on one hole I played my first ball (A Strat tour ultimate 2) and faded it just into the rough. I hit the D-Tech just about the same and it ended up in the fairway, near the rough about 10 yds closer to the green. Typical low spin distance ball stuff.
Cons: It feels like a rock and does not seem to have the finesse of the XS Distance. While it might be as long as the XS Distance, the harder feel and reduced green holding capabilty make the ball less likeable and less playable. The XS Distance was a monsterously long ball offering low spin, but would still be somewhat playable into the green. these balls are more rock like -- more like the horrible Nike Ti-Distance ball. in bounce tests it is right up there with the other long balls out there. For a straight flying ball, I greatly prefer the Wilson Straight Distance.
Quality: The ball looks nice enough -- nothing fancy, bright white with Maxfli black lettering. Each ball seems to be flawlessly made, though they still have a cheap feel to them when you hit them.
Review Summary: A straight, high flying, low spin, distance ball with a hard feel. It seems to lack the refinement of the XS Distance. It's an inexpensive ball and to me plays like one. Nevertheless, it's durable, long and straight flying -- could be what the doctor ordered for many golfers.
