Purchase: I was looking for a set of wedges on the internet and happened across a set of 3 wedges by this company I never heard of...MERIT. Before I bid on the clubs I did some research and found that Merit doesn't advertise. I can't explain that since with a little more research I found out that they were very highly rated by a golf testing firm. In fact, they were rated even better than Cleveland wedges! I found their website, did a little reading and thought they looked like exactly what I was looking for. Hey, I like going with underdogs if they are up to par. I paid $145 for a set of 3 barely used Merit wedges on eBay.
Pros: The wedges are pretty standard is lies. The gap is a 52*, the sand is a 56* and the lob is a 60*. I benched the gap wedge when I first got the clubs because I didn't see a need for both a pitching wedge and a gap wedge in my bag. It wasn't until I lost my PW when I pulled the gap wedge back into play. Man, I guess things happen for a reason 'cause I love that gap wedge! It handles everything I need between my 9 iron and sand wedge. The clubs feel very nice and I say that after having tried almost every club on the market. I could not justify spending tons more money on a name brand (as in heavily advertised) when these wedges are every much as good. They look great too with the gunmetal finish that rivals the Titleist 'Oil Can'. They play well and by that I mean that they fly and stick nicely. Be it approach shots from the fairway or rough or sand shots or greenside chips....they are solid and faithful to your swing.
Cons: I've always felt that grips are very personal regardless of whatever quality that might come with a club. It's either hit or miss. That really isn't a big deal considering how relatively cheap they are to have installed. The ones that came on the Merit wedges are fine. When they start to wear I will probably upgrade them to the new Winn Arrows. All else is great...total quality!
Quality: The finish, the grooves, the shape of the head, you name it, is of no less caliber than any of the major brands. Cleveland, Titleist, Mizuno etc. have nothing on these clubs as far as quality and construction.
Review Summary: If you are more interested in the game and how well clubs perform rather than what brand others see in your bag, buy these wedges. I think having wedges that I can score well with that aren't what everyone else in my foursome have in their hands is a cool thing. You'd be surprised how many times I'm asked what kind of wedge I'm using...especially when I land one right next to the cup from 60 out.
