On 2006-09-14, Grobster rated this Mizuno MPOO1 9deg graffalloy Blue Stiff a 4...(7405)
Details: Grafalloy Stiff, 45' total length, 9 deg loft, golf pride new decade grip
Purchase: Bought the driver on ebay for GBP 50.00 ish, in Dec 05. I had read a lot of mixed reviews about the this driver and shaft combination, and being a fan of the grafalloy Prolite 35X, I thought that I may as well try the Blue stiff.
Pros: The apperance of the club is very good looking in a classy way. It is quite robust, and hence a damaged club means that it has had some serious abuse. In terms of accuracy the club is very good, but the Grafalloy blue stiff shaft does take a lot of getting used to, to get good results. Most will quit, and move on to another driver, before they get it working well!
Cons: Having played the Prolite 35 X flex shaft in my drivers, and am used to playing a very stiff shaft needing good loading and acceleration through the ball. The grafalloy blue stiff is a different kettle of fish. It is 'poker' stiff! Hence, it can give a tendancy to swing hard at the ball, rather than accelerate through it. The result is that distance is lost, as the shaft doesn't become loaded and recoil through at the point of release. Because of the low torque/twist of the shaft it give a true ball flight, however it is either a push right of left due to the difficulty in getting an smooth accelerating, rather than 'stabby' swing.
If you do go for the grafalloy blue option make sure that you get the right flight, and that more than likely means a softer flex than you are used to with other shaft models.
You may get some softening of the shaft, by adding up to about 10g of lead tape, low, near the heal of the head. It is then easier to get the shaft recoil, and a higher launch angle.
Quality: Construction of the club is spot on! Really attractive in a classy way. I played with this driver for about 8 months, and appart from the normal minor impact marks on the face, and sole, then it remaining in excellent condition.
Review Summary: In general it is quite a good club. Accurate and straight with a good swing tempo. Don't fool yourself about your swing speed and ability to 'load' this shaft, as it is easy to push or pull shots in persuit of distance. If you normally play a stiff shaft, then a regular blue would probably suit you better.
