On 2003-06-14, James rated this Mizuno TZoid Forged Titanium a 4...(1522)

Purchase: In December 2001, I acquired a set of Mizuno TZoid Forged Titanium woods to match my new set of Mizuno MX-11 irons. I special ordered the woods from Mizuno through a local (Augusta, Georgia) golf retailer. When I ordered the woods, I specified UST ProForce 65/Stiff shafts and a 9 degree loft for the driver. The driver cost $299.
Pros: The Mizuno driver was a significant upgrade from my previous drivers, a Cleveland Tour Action Ti and a Wilson Whale. With a smooth swing and contact in the sweet spot, the Mizuno driver gives me about 15 to 20 yards extra yards with significantly less effort - 270 yards versus 250-255. Good shots have an ideal, medium trajectory. Contact with the ball produces a pleasing muffled sound similar to a laminated head, not the tinny sound typical of many Ti heads, including my Tour Action.
Cons: The sweet spot is not overly large, certainly not equal to that of today's oversize heads. For me, toe hits generate ballooning push fades, whil heel hits can produce smother hooks. To square the club face, I have to be careful to maintain a smooth tempo and not overswing. The Mizuno driver is not nearly as workable as my Tour Action. Only occasionally can I purposely draw or fade my drives, but that probably is a consequence of going to a stiffer shaft.
Quality: I have not had any problems other than a worn out grip. The driver seems to be built solidly. With normal use, it doesn't dent and the paint doesn't chip, even on the top edge of the club face. The ProForce shafts smudge if they contact the irons in my bag, but the smudges wipe off with a damp cloth.

Review Summary: This is an ideal driver for a mid- to low-handicapper with a smooth tempo. High-handicappers and hard swingers would be well-advised to opt for a more up-to-date driver with an oversized head. In the hands of a skilled golfer, this club combines the distance of modern Ti heads with the feel and workability of old-fashioned wood heads.
