On 2007-01-01, Matt McD rated this Mizuno F-50 a 5...(7570)

Details: I only have the 5 wood for the time being, and I got it with a 'fairway specific' Exsar FS2 graphite shaft with a regular flex

Purchase: Ebay, £25, brand new, still in wrapping. Absolute bargain. I do normally like to buy from my local club, becuase the clubs need all the help they can get, but this was too good to turn down.
Pros: It goes very far and usually pretty straight. I was a little apprehensive when I got this because I always had seen it described as a 'fantastic club for the better player', but presumably not so great for the hackers among us. I get about 180 - 185 yards of carry off the fairway, compared to my old one which I got about 175 yards of carry from the tee (it was a bit chunky so I struggled from the floor). I really like the small head, it makes it great for hitting off the deck, whether from the long grass or the fairway. The weight is positioned very low, which promotes a high flying ball, which is great for me because I sometimes struggle to get the ball airborne on those long approach shots. Apart from that, as I said it goes straight, normally arrow straight, but occasionally with a slight fade (but I think that's just me!). Great looking, and acoustically very acceptable - sometimes with these composite woods they are really load, to the extent they can become embarrassing, but this was nice and quiet.
Cons: The small head makes it quite hard to hit off the tee, as it is quite easy to sky it. This happened to me at the range and my ball when straight up, hit the ceiling, and I ended up running round after it while it bounced around on the concrete, not cool!!! Apart from that no probs at all.
Quality: Really good quality, no problems at all.

Review Summary: I have been really impressed by this club, and continue to be so every time I take it out of the bag. If you like your fairways to have a small head, rather than some of the big brutes you can see nowadays (I think Callaway's X 3 Hot is bigger than the original Big Bertha driver) then I think this is the best there is. For single figure handicappers, all the reviews I have seen say this is the club for you as it has power and versatility in spades, but for those of us who perhaps aren't quite so accomplished, don't be put off - this club is easy to use, and produces consistent, long strikes from all lies. Just be careful the first time you take it out down the range!!! I am now saving up (and scourering ebay) for the 3 wood, so watch this space for the follow up review. Thank you for reading my review, I hope you found it useful.
