Purchase: For my 20th wedding anniversary, after I'd purchased a very fine diamond anniversary ring for my wife, she said my present was to be a new set of irons. But, (oh darn) I'd have to pick them out since she didn't know what to buy. Well, after hitting about 100 different clubs (all brands I thought I wanted, like TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Titleist) at GolfSmith, I decided to go to a local golf course proshop that was advertising a Labor Day weekend sale. Hit the Mizuno Comp EZ's and was hooked. The Comp EZ is last year's model, now replaced by the MX20, as I understand. But these were brand new and had never been hit. $495. After my purchase, the only place I'd seen them for the same price, was in a Edwin Watts late-summer clearance catalog, but online they're not there. Found them elsewhere, online, for $595 and up. Sooooo, I feel pretty good about the purchase price.
Pros: CONSISTENCY!!!!! I have the steel shafts, Dynalite Gold,R300. My old irons are Lynx Black Cats with Unifiber Flare Graphite shafts. I never realized how much more consistent I could be with a different set of irons/shafts. Distance is exactly the same, but since I went from graphite to steel, I'm guess I'm really getting more distance (I think, if I understand the difference between steel and grahpite). I've doubled my "greens in regulation", from an average of 6 per round to 12 per round, at least for the 6 rounds I've played with the Comp EZ's. I've broken the '90' barrier again for the first time in over 20 years (I played golf from the time I was 11 until 24, then didn't pick up a club again until 4 years ago).
Cons: Mis-hits. I guess since it's a forged iron head, paired with a steel shaft, I feel it when I don't hit it right. They might be more forgiving with the Dynalite Gold with sensicore shaft.
Quality: Fabulous quality and construction. Un-matched. Like I mentioned above, before I found these clubs, I hit every club I ever dreamed of owning, and never realized just how great Mizuno's were, until I found this set. The feeling when you hit the ball right is fantastic. I can't beleive how satisfying the feedback is. I never felt anything from my Lynx irons, so forgiving that I could only tell bad shots from good shots by where the ball would end up.
Review Summary: I can't say enough about how great these irons truly are. I'm hitting the ball straighter and more consistently than before and I'm hitting more greens. I thought that giving up graphite and going to steel would hurt my distance, but that hasn't been the case. The 6 iron from my old set flew a 160 yards, and the new Mizuno 6 flies the same distance, but straighter. They have helped me lower my score with a much greater degree of accuracy, that I never thought possible. I love the feeling when I hit the ball with these clubs. I am truly excited about playing golf again.
