On 2004-08-03, rachmak rated this Mizuno MP-14 Irons a 5...(3972)
Purchase: I traded my DCI Gold cavity backs for a set of used MP-14s. I was scared to trade in my cavity backs at first because I had not hit the blades other than in the net in the golf store. That was the greatest golf risk I have taken thus far.
Pros: My set has the rifle shafts and golf pride grips. My grips need replacing, but other than that, these irons give you so much confidence at setup. They are smaller than traditional cavitity back or other models, but if you want the confidence to "attack the pin" , these would be the clubs to go for. Once I finally learned to hit the sweet spot and dial in my distances, all shots within 160 yards are serious attack shots for me. The short-mid irons are very easy to hit and fly with perfect trajectory when you hit them flush. When you hit them well, your shots are guaranteed to generate spin and stop on the green within 6 feet. Long irons are easy to hit as well compared to other long irons I have hit. I wouldn't say I can attack with them (but that my have to do with my ability level), but they go straight and far. Contrary to traditional belief, these blades also handle mishits quite well. I'm hit plenty of thin shots, but the weighted sole has helped get the ball in the air with decent spin.
Another thing, is that the playability is outstanding. I don't usually try to play draws or fades, but when I do need to, these clubs make it easy for me to do so and I can see the results.
These are definetely incredibly addicting clubs to hit. For a low-mid handicapper, who plays on a weekly basis, these clubs will definetely make you a more precise ball striker and change the way you attack each whole.
Cons: Well, they are blades....if you are like me, and take "golf breaks", it'll take a few rounds to dial in. Also, unless you hit them flush, you might get inconsistent distance. These clubs are definetely for players with stronger swings. I also feel that they are somewhat heavy and I can't practice too long with them and my arms get tired towards the end of my round.
Quality: Very good. I'm banged these clubs for almost 5 years now. There are the typical aesthetic blemishes, but performance wise, these clubs are like fine wine. The more you hit them, the better they get. I just ordered a set of Callaway irons to test out, but I don't think I'll every fully switch away from my Mp-14s
Review Summary: If you are a low-mid handicapper, using these clubs will not only improve your ballstriking skills, but they will allow you to feel the confidence and precisions the pros have to attack the hole. If you have a good swing, buy these clubs. They will make your golf game so much more enjoyable.
