On 2005-11-04, Cub (Baby Tiger) rated this Mizuno MX-23 Nippon Light Steel shaft NPro-950 a 5...(6374)

Purchase: Got it second hand for $600, almost brand new. The original owner didn't like the heavier weight.
Pros: To shape the ball, I need the feel and the swing that "slow" me down in my downswing (kind of late hit). Decided to try heavier club and forged. MX23 has it all. The feedback when hitting it flush is great - butter soft. The Nippon Light Steel shaft is another great combination. 95gm is heavier but not too heavy for me (145lb). The heavier clubs gave me a sense of "pause" at the top of my swing which allows me to initiate my downswing with a shift to the left instead of casting my clubs down. The light steel shaft is "regular" but definitely feel stiffer than graphite. All works towards the right mechanics. My distance has increased 10-15 yards more. Hitting it well, 7-iron is 170 yards. Off center hit still a 150 yards. MX23 is a very forgiving club. Never have problem with direction on off center hits. Ball flight is fabulous. High trajectory with great distance, low piercing trajectory with a draw on 4-iron "stinger" (Tiger's 2-iron's version) are all suddenly made possible.
Cons: Watch the club face. Only clean them with cloth. The metal scrub removes the protective layer easily. That could be the reason why some mentioned rusting.
Quality: Grip is good - original. Lie is good. Perhaps being a Japanese made, the length is suitable too for my height - 5' 8". The clubs look great at setup. Tried Titleist 704/804, McGregor's VIP, Callaway x-16. MX23 is still the most appealing looking clubs - that boosts confidence (don't underestimate that).

Review Summary: Excellent clubs for someone who is seriously exploring ball striking. MX23 has the right combination - reasonable price, great looking, great feedback on forged, longer distance, higher trajectory, ability to shape the ball flights. Not for beginner regardless the handicap, beginners will not be able to appreciate the feel as yet.
