On 2007-07-04, Marc rated this Mizuno MX-25 a 5...(7829)

Details: Regular flex graphite shafts, 2 degrees upright

Purchase: Fitted in the Philippines, but purchased via Edwin Watts and picked up on a visit to the States. Only bought the 5 iron thru PW.
Pros: The softer feel of a forged club, good looking clubs, reasonably forgiving for a mid-handicapper.
Cons:
Quality: Top quality.

Review Summary: As I trawled the product review sites thoroughly before buying my Mizuno MX-25s, I guess I have a duty to report in. I waited until I've had time to both go to the range and play a half-dozen rounds. Bottom-line: these are really sweet, soft clubs, and if you are upgrading from something less appealing, want to try forged clubs for the first time or simply switching brands, you should be pleased. I was playing Pings for nearly 20 years, first a set of berrylium-copper Eye-2s and then a set of i-3s, and I liked them both. But the 3s were seven or eight years old, and I wanted something new. But I didn't like the new Ping Raptures -- too big, didn't feel like a Ping. I even found the G5s a bit clunky. Ping gets you accustomed to un-chromed, matte-finished irons with no ferrule. At first, everything I looked at, including the Mizunos, seemed off-putting -- TaylorMade, Cleveland, Callaways (which I once flirted with for six months between Ping sets). But once I got used to the idea of shinny clubs with a ferrule, Mizuno stood out both due to design, manufacturing (forged) and feel. I live in Asia, so I tested the MX-25s on the range, was fit (regular flex and length graphite, 2 degrees upright) but ordered the clubs and picked them up in the States. I've quickly adjusted to the look. Even after a month with the Mizunos, the matte finish on the Pings now seems odd. As a 14 handicap, I wasn't sure how much change I'd noticed. But it is true that you get a much 'softer' feel with these forged Mizunos, as compared to my cast Pings. On nicely struck shots, the ball just seems to jump off the club with -- unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a better word -- with a 'softer' feel. Altho' forged, the design is cavity back, more mass on the perimeter. Perhaps they are a shade less forgiving than my Pings, but really a very little difference. Meaning that even as a 14 handicapper, I don't see that I'm losing anything with a slightly, but only slightly, less forgiving club. I'm using Ping hybirds to replace my 3 and 4 irons, but I find no loss of distance with the Mizuno MX-25s in my irons. In fact, the 5 and 6 iron seem longer than my Pings. I've rambled on a bit, but hopefully someone out there finds this useful. In summary, they are really sweet clubs, as accurate and penetrating as your swing will allow, and if you are looking to give forged clubs a try, these are a great choice.

Details: Comes standard with the Dynamic Gold SL steel shafts

Purchase: I played with Mizuno irons in the past. I had several of the MP line. I stayed away from the MX models because of my ego. I bought my son an MX-23 iron set when it first came out and finally tried it. Couldn't believe how forgiving the set was. So when Mizuno came out with the MX-25, I had to get it. The MX-25 supposedly is an improvement of the MX-23 model.
Pros: Draws, fades, knockdowns is not a problem with this set. You can't get anything better than a forged, cavity back iron set. Mizuno is known for it's quality forging, similar to other forged sets such as Miura, Tourstage, etc.
Cons: None that I can think of at this point. My GIR's has improved dramatically.
Quality: Regarding Mizuno's quality, just look at the number of PGA pros that carry Mizuno irons in their bags. They wouldn't play with an inferior product when it's their livelihood.

Review Summary: The MX-23 was Mizuno's best selling irons. I think the 25's is an improvement over the 23's.
