On 2004-07-30, Cotati Roy rated this Nicklaus Air Max 440 9 Degree a 5...(3962)

Purchase: After ripping the head off my Cobra 427 SS (reviewed previously 3-03) and having it repaired twice I decided to shop for a new driver when it lost its feel. I was looking at the new Cobra 440 as well as the TM 580XD, Callaway ERC and one of the folks at Nevada Bob's suggested I try the Air Max so I picked one up for $265 and gave it a chance.
Pros: Better than average looks. Fujikura stiff shaft is fantastic. Original grip is decent, but will likely be replaced with a preferred Winn grip. Club it very easy, comfortable to swing. Just like the Cobra, good contact is rewarded with amazing distance. Hit it on the button and it is every bit as long, if not longer than any driver I've tried. I doubt I'll ever see another 355 yarder (hole 10 at Windsor) that I once got out of the Cobra, but I'll take an extra 5-10 yards on my average drives and stay in the fairway.
Cons: Head is nice, but a bit plain. No marker on head, which I like for some reason even if I never really use it to line up.
Quality: As noted earlier, shaft is fantastic and club looks and feels as if it has superior build quality.

Review Summary: Everyone says they can hit a ball 280-290-300, but I've played with everyone from scratch golfers to those with 30+ handicaps and have only met a few that can really hit 270+ and stay in play with any consistency. With this club I can drive 260-270+ consistently and stay in play. You could pay a lot more for a driver from the big 3 or you could save a few bucks and play better golf. Try it, you'll like it.

Went to the range yesterday to practice. Took the new 9.5* driver to test it out. I hit it a lot better than I figured I would with that factory insta
