On 2005-08-19, Joe Golfer rated this Nicklaus Iron Max Hybrid MC Iron 18* a 4...(6076)

Purchase: I was given this club as a gift. A friend paid $39.99 for it from Edwin Watts Golf via the web. I never hit a three iron well, so some time back I started using a hybrid, first a Snake Eyes model, then a Sonartec MD in 21* of loft. I have an 18* fairway wood, but I had mentioned that I hit it too high when the wind is against me, which holds up the flight and causes a loss of yardage and unpredictable distances. A friend saw this club in the catalog and gave me a gift. It is an 18* hybrid which looks more like a thick iron than a fairway wood. It has a graphite shaft listed as "medium/firm".
Pros: If you are not familiar with this model, it looks sort of like the Tour Edge Bazooka hybrids or an earlier model Mizuno Fli-Hi. It's a good complement to my golf bag. It does hit the ball on a more penetrating trajectory than my fairway wood, and it's easy to control as well. Shaft flex feels OK for my swing speed.
Cons: Distance is about ten yards less than with my fairway wood of same loft, probably due to shaft length and the fact that I hit the fairway wood a little more solidly most of the time.
Quality: It's a good quality club. Just because the price is around forty bucks doesn't mean it's a cheaply made club. Nicklaus Golf generally makes some pretty good stuff, even if the name doesn't carry the same prestige as it used to, or as much as the current crop of popular hybrid companies like Taylor Made or Nike or Callaway.

Review Summary: I always use a 21* Sonartec hybrid instead of a three iron. It gives a very penetrating trajectory, yet it's easy to hit. The Nicklaus model isn't quite as easy to hit, most likely because the loft is three degrees lower, thus harder to hit. Still, it is fairly easy to handle, and it does give a more penetrating shot than a fairway wood of the same loft. I'll probably carry the fairway wood on calm days, and the new Nicklaus hybrid on windy days. If you have the same problem of a higher lofted fairway wood getting up too high when you hit into the wind, this is a pretty inexpensive solution to the problem.
