On 2006-03-20, Hammer rated this Nike Ignite - 2006 a 5...(6734)
Purchase: I bought a sleeve of these at a big golf shop in greater L.A. for $6.49, they go for $24.99/dozen.
I bought it seeking greater distance while needing good feel and spin for the short ones. The old conundrum...distance vs. feel. Having gotten my scores lower lately, I went in search of a good 'feel' ball that doesn't lose distance. Top-Flites don't cut it anymore. I'm willing to pay slightly more, but not 'Premium' ball $$.
Pros: Virtually everything. Great look, bright white, feels well-made in your hand. I played a round with it, as a comparison to a few other balls I've been trying/auditioning. They include Hogan Hawk, Big Bertha 2006 ball, HX Hot, Srixon AD-333, and Top Flite Infinity Buttery Feel (the ball I'm looking to replace).
This is a 3-piece ball, and has good responsiveness to lots of strikes. On the first tee, hit a LONG drive, 20 yards past my normal...on a hole I know well. No doubt 20+ yards gained. That immediately made me worry about the up-coming wedge shot...this was going to be too hot, no spin, etc., like all the other 'distance' balls, and I was wrong!
It's a great ball. It sticks, it does reduce spin on drives, but not on the short ones. It flies a mile, and feels awesome. I hit some of the best chips and wedge shots of my life.
I think it's the ball the HX Hot wishes it was. Distance and grab. HX Hot rolled out over and over, on the same course, and the Ignite stayed or rolled back slightly, where it hit the green. It's a 3-piece pleasure.
Cons: Nothing really. I will be paying close attention the next round I play with it, to see if one balloon-y, 3-wood, shot happens again, could have been wind or me though.
Quality: Top notch all around, and quite durable too. Held up really well, which makes it an added value to the cost-conscious like me.
Review Summary: I think I just found my ball. It has similar feel to the Hogan (a fellow 3-piece ball), which I really like, but it has more distance. I wanted the awesome control of the Hogan Hawk, with more distance, and was looking for more feel than most 2-piece long bombers (Top-Flite, Pinnacle, Noodle). This was it. I think it is awesome for being in the mid-range of prices. Well-worth the 3-5 dollars more than Mojo/Loco/Noodle/SoLo/ETC.
I don't give a 5 lightly, and this is a 5.
