On 2005-09-20, Mr Kelly rated this Nike Ignite 460cc a 3...(6211)

Purchase: I was buying a set of Ping G2 irons from my local and trusted pro-shop, JK's World of Golf, New Zealand. I desperately needed to update from my old Wilsons. When it came to selecting a driver i asked the pro for a good range of 'Big-Heads'. After hitting a few with the Ignite, G2 driver, Cleveland and a Taylor Made, i felt the Ignite gave me the best distance, of which i needed since i play with a slight fade. As it happened the Nike sales rep was in the shop at the time and he pressured the owner into offering a super deal along with a box of free Nike Mojo balls. In the end i paid about $900 NZD for the driver.
Pros: The 460cc head gives a player confidence, the brand and the aethetics gives the owner a sense of pride. The sound of the ball coming off the face cracks through the quite fairways like a high powered sniper rifle. the expressions of envy on the faces of the other three players when they hear the shot is priceless.
Cons: For all it's inbuilt technology, the hot face, the large sweet spot, the soft tip... it never really lived up to it's perceived potential. My playing partners would often comment on how short my drives were after the club made all that racket. I realised that although the club made me feel good, it had not enhanced my game at all, which was extremely dissapointing especially when my iron game improved in leaps and bounds with the G2 irons.
Quality: Aesthetics are great, the club looks like the real deal. The shaft and grip are of excellent quality and construction. However, the headcover is poorly designed, what were Nike thinking, trying to push that 460 head through the 'sock' and into the cover is demoralising after a poor drive and near fustrating after the best of shots. Apart from the head cover, i stand this club in the same class as any of the major brands.

Review Summary: Whilst haveing a bad day with the driver and having to rescue holes with my 3 wood, i questioned myself as to why i could hit a 3 wood (Taylor-made) off the fairway straight for 200 meters on the fly yet couldn't get the Ignite past the 220 mark with the bend (fade). Answer: as it turned out, it was all to do with the shaft, the Ignite i bought had a regular flex and high kick point, my 3 wood shaft has a firm flex and low kick point...........anyway, i had the Ignite fitted with an I-Rod low-kick stiff shaft.........suffice to say that there are some dog leg holes at my local where i can't play my driver anymore for fear of landing in trouble with the long ball, thankfully i started consistently playing my 3 wood off the tee with some great results, so the 460 Ignite only comes out to play on the long straights. It says a lot about customisation which when i look back, is the difference between what i did to get the good irons and what i should've done to get a good driver.

The sound of the ball coming off the face cracks through the quite fairways like a high powered sniper rifle. the expressions of envy on the faces of the other three players when they hear the shot is priceless. I don't tend to work the ball much, i like to moderate my fade and i rarely try to draw the ball so i'm not sure how the club works in this area, i have a golf buddy playing off scratch, and he seemed to be able to get the club working the ball easily, he tried the club out during a period where he was looking for a new driver, in the end he updated his Cleveland and simply said, the Nike although performed, it didn't out perform the Cleveland so he stayed with the brand he knew well.
Cons: For all it's inbuilt technology, the hot face, the large sweet spot, the soft tip... it never really lived up to it's perceived potential. My playing partners would often comment on how short my drives were as they expected more from the noisy racket. I realised that although the club made me feel good, it had not enhanced my game at all, which was extremely dissapointing especially when my iron game improved in leaps and bounds with the G2 irons.
