On 2005-06-08, One Happy Golfer rated this Nike Slingshots a 5...(5626)

Purchase: I had a 13 year old set of Lynx Black Cats and wondered if technology had really improved irons over the last decade. I long since had retired my 3 and 4 irons and tried (for years) replacing them with a whole bunch of different woods, utilities and hybrids. I wanted to get the 3 and 4 irons back in my bag and be able to have clubs that would reliably hit the ball 190-220 and straight off the tee and from the fairway. I compared Ping G2s, Callaway x18s and Nike slingshots off a mat at a local store. I ended up ordering the Nikes (steel shaft, stiff flex) online for $599 saving $100 plus sales tax over the local retailer.
Pros: Unlike others who reported immediate positive results, it took me about 4 rounds to get comfortable with the clubs (my other clubs were graphite, regular flex and didn't have the offset that the Nikes do). I started out with lots of mishits and seemed to pull everything a little to the left. About the 5th round, I had a breakthrough. The ball started to scream off the face of the 3 and 4 irons. My 3 iron off the tee went further than the drivers of some average players and were not nearly as far short of the better players as I expected. It was hard to keep the grin off my face as the PW-6 irons seemed to zero in on the flags and I had more makeable birdie putts in one round than I usually have in 3 rounds. You just know things are good when your playing partners start taking the clubs out of your bag in mid-round to check them out.
Cons: With my old clubs, I took fairly good sized divots with my short irons and used the spin to hold the ball on the green. The bounce on these clubs keeps you from really digging a good divot with the short irons (one of the adjustments I had to make in swing path) although the trajectory of the ball seems to allow for the ball to settle pretty well when it hits the green. Maybe with more usage I will learn how to impart the same level of spin on the ball as I did with my old clubs. The only other negative about this set is that Nike Slingshots don't have a game improvement putter.
Quality: Superb. The look and feel make feel real comfortable over the ball.

Review Summary: I have read reviews of people who don't think they get feedback from the club and can't work the ball. I disagree. You may not recognize a mishit from the distance and direction the ball travels, but you can feel it. The feeling is more subtle than in other clubs, but it is there. I can still work the ball from left to right (never been able to work it from right to left anyway). My objective in buying the clubs was to work my handicap down from 13 to single digits. I'm pretty sure after my most recent success with these clubs that they will help me do that. Remember, these are "game improvement" irons and I'm a golfer that needs a little help improving parts of my game that I identified as weaknesses. To my surprise, the areas of my game that I thought were good are also improving.

Purchase: Acquired from Golf Discount in St. Louis Mo 3-PW for $599.
Pros: I demoed the clubs at a local range compairing 6 irons, T.M RAC's, Slingshots, and Clevland Tour serries. I compaired hitting off a tee, fairware and found some 6 inch rough that I hit all 3 irons out of. Of the compairson I liked the RAC's the best with the Slingshots a close second. The RAC's were 600$ more so I went with the Slingshots. I like the weighting and forgiveness that the sling shot affords you. I also am a touch longer if I swing hard, but I've been trying to get away from that. With a smooth swing I get the same distance as I did with my reg swing with Tommy Armour 845s
Cons: Playing at the range and a real round of golf is a big difference. Finding these difficult to get used to. While a mis-hit is more foregiving it can be tough to make a good swing ( with out doing some mechnical changes ) especially with the longer irons. Sometime can be hard to hit out of the long and thick roungh. especially with long irongs. All in all A good buy but still getting used to them
Quality: funky fat looking PW. I think the clubs may be the best looking on the market. Shafts seem a little fatter than my old clubs too.

Review Summary: worth the buy, but I really wish I would have held out and got the RAC's. Taylor Made continues to be the leader in technology in the golf club world while this is Nike's first attempt all be it these were 8 years in the making.
