On 2004-05-19, Tylerwigs rated this Nike Iron/Wood 18* Stiff a 5...(3662)
Purchase: I Demo'D this club for 18 holes and a bucket at Badger Creek golf course in Chilton. I needed a club that fit in my yardage gap between my Cobra SS 3 wood and my 3 iron. I needed approximatly a 225-240 yard club. I paid $105.00.
I don't like 5 woods because they go too high to be safe and I had a feeling that this club would be as long as any 5 wood. Actually if I didn't have the Cobra 3 wood which is real long, this Nike might replace someones 3 woood.
Pros: I love the distance with this club, could go a wind aided 250. However, this club is easy to love for anyone. I needed it on my 2nd shot from 246 uphill, 2nd cut (I had not ever swung it before). I hit it dead straight and came up about 10 yards short of the green. I was so pleasantly surprised with the feel, I threw down another ball to see if it was beginners luck. I swung again (real hard this time), this time it was on the same line, a bit higher and landed on the green. At that point I was really leaning towards buying it, especially when I saw that the 2nd shot took 2 hops and stuck!
Out of the Rough it get sthrough better than an iron or a full wodd. And the length of the shaft(think 1 inch shorter than a 3 wood) gives you plenty of room to choke down and still hit it further than a long iron. Off the tee it promotes a whale of confidence, as the red and silver color scheme show off a huge sweet spot.
Bonus: I used it to putt from the fringe and as Peter kessler would say: "Perfect"!
Overall, It was as good of a trial as possible, hoepfully it comes without any grwing pains. I look forward to using this club for years to come.
Cons: This will be nit picking, but I can't leave it blank.
The lenngth of the club with the smallish head size, at first seems like you are too far away from the ball. On my first time using off the tee I felt that way and crowded over the ball and got stuck too far inside and pulled it left.
My playing partner didn't like the red on the crown.
Quality: Top Notch. The Nike shaft seems to be a bit heavier than some of their competitors, which promotes control for me. Weather I swung intentionally hard or easy, the club performed the same way, consistent.
Review Summary: If your too cocky to buy a utilty club like my playing partners are, your losing out without having one. This club is just that, utilitarian! Not to mention, they give me a whole new shot. I used to hate long par 3's i.e. 230 yards. Now with this club i feel like those are easier than the 190's when I need my 4 or 5 iron.
