On 2005-01-30, Mike K - IL rated this Orlimar Hip-Ti 420cc Driver w/Aldila NV-55 stiff shaft a 4...(4980)

Purchase: Purchased driver off Ebay in 2004 for $190. In 2003, I purchased The Orlimar Hip-Steel fairway metals in a 3,5,& 7 wood. Every year for the past 8 years I try and often buy a new 3 wood and driver-looking for the answer and edge. I'm currently a 5 handicap. I loved the looks and performance of the Hip-Steel woods so well, I decided to acquire an Orlimar driver. I have been a big supporter of Titleist and own the 975J,JVS, and 983K drivers. All are excellent, and offer better control and workability, but they are not nearly as long as the Orlimar Hip-Ti 420.
Pros: This driver sets up well, has a traditional look, and with the NV shaft is much longer than the 983K. The Aldila stiff shaft is tipped stiff for a lower boring flight and is wonderful for those demand a truly consistent stiff to extra stiff shaft flex. This driver is probably 15-25 yards longer than my 983K. The ball simply explodes off the face. The ball fades from this club more than I'd like and I will experiment with lead tape and perhaps a slightly smaller grip for better control. I have hit a number of absolutely long powerful 300+ drives with this club. Not bad for a 46 year old.
Cons: Orlimar provides a leather headcover with it's woods. They are black and beautiful. However, these monster size driver heads have fit issues with headcovers. It takes two hands to put it on.
Quality: Orlimar has manufactured a quality product and will save you money from the premier OEM's.

Review Summary: If you desire additional length off the tee, want a club with significant eye appeal, and demand performance - the Hip-Ti driver may be for you.
