Purchase: Purchased for $299 at Golf Galaxy in Orland Park, IL.
Needed to get a big headed driver to catch up to the pack.
Pros: I looked at alot of large headed drivers, and this is the one that felt the best to me. There were several that looked pretty good to the eye, so I had a hard time deciding. I finally narrowed it down to the Nike Ignite, the TaylorMade r5, and this one. The reason I went with the Ping is because they had several shaft options to choose from. They had Pings with the standard Ping stock shaft, with the green Aldila NV shaft, and with the Grafalloy ProLaunch 65 shaft, which is what I went with. I swing about 95 mph, and am often between a regular and stiff flex shaft with graphite shafts. The Nike felt too soft. The Ping's Aldila NV green felt too weak in regular, and too stiff in the stiff flex.
Their stock shaft wasn't bad, but then I tried the ProLaunch 65 and that was it. It plays fairly firm for an R flex, which is what I like. It has the firmness of a steel shaft but the light weight of graphite. I went with the 10.5* to get that more soaring ball flight with the lower spinning balls nowadays, as they are always saying in the magazines that most people play with too little loft for their game.
I like that it has a tall face. Some 460 drivers have faces that aren't as tall, but are deeper from front to back. This one has the tall face and good length from heel to toe, but is more pear shaped than some others. Similar to the both the NIke Ignite and the TaylorMade r5 in shape.
Cons: The only thing I would change is the length. It came at 45 and 3/4 inches, and I would rather have it about 45 inches like most makers do. I suppose this is a pretty easy fix at the pro shop if I should decide to shorten it and re-grip it later, but I guess I will leave it where it is for now and see how it goes.
The shaft label writing is neither up nor down, but rather on the right side of the shaft as installed into this club. I thought this might be a mistake, but all the drivers with this shaft were made the same way.
Quality: Terrific.
Review Summary: I think this is a terrific driver. Long and forgiving. It has good control, without unexpected hooks or slices which are sometimes due to improper flex. If you want a large headed driver that has a lot of shaft options, I would suggest you try this new PING G2 driver.
Many manufacturers offer only one shaft, or offer others if you special order it, but then you would have to know how it feels and hits in advance for the store to order it for you to purchase. Ping had a lot of drivers in stock in the store with different shafts and lofts, so you could try them out right there in the store in the hitting bay. I think that this ability to customize right there in the store without having to order something is what sold me on this driver as opposed to the others.
