On 2006-04-01, Roland rated this Ping EYE 2 Orange Dot a 5...(6760)
Details: These Eye 2's have a 2 degree flat lie and have a shaft length 1/2 below standard. They are gray steel cast cavity backs with ZZ-Lite stiff flex steel shafts.
Purchase: Paid 226 on ebay. I have played Wilson Fat Shafts and forged Walter Hagens (integras). Neither of these suited me; the Fat Shafts were shovels and I was fooling myself with the forged Hagens, which had minimal offset and a thin topline. I did have a set of Pal Joey ST's which were modeled after the Ping ISI; I liked those so a search for older Pings began. Recommendations from friends and reviews online led me to the Ping EYE2.
Pros: Consistency with these clubs is quick to achieve; can easily call for a fade or draw with a slight manipulation of my grip. Oh crap, I can even hit the 3 iron fairly.
The design is old but proven. Actually a better word would be 'original'. This design was born out of neccesity; for the ease of hitting the ball, unlike the modern clubs which are marketed for rehashed techno-babble and gadgetry.
Cons: Being over 20 years old, the heads showed a good amount of wear. I knew this when purchasing them from the seller, but seeing the age in hand was a bit disheartening.
So I sent them to Instant Replay Golf in Austin, TX for refurbishing. They now have a smooth tumble finish, deep clean grooves and sharp, bright paint fill. They do excellent work.
Quality: The head is cast steel. It is a deep cavity back with an obvious offset. There is no ferrule at the hosel. Inside the cavity is an acute elliptical cut that displays 'PING EYE2' and a centered color dot of the fit. Serial numbers are etched along the hosel and about the eye. On the lip of the topline reads 'KARTSEN PHEOENIX AZ 85068 USA'. The serial numbers on this set match.
With the refurbishing and new grips the clubs look factory new.
Unlike chromed heads, they can handle a good beating. Bag dings are not a concern.
The topline is not thin but it is also not as thick as Callaway's offerings.
Review Summary: Design simplicity at it's best; no exotic face material, no polymer inserts and no weighted screws.
A single cast material with a cavity back and offset than combine for a clean crisp impact on the ball. It provides me with confidence at address and results that are predictable and satisfying.
