On 2004-11-28, Jayson rated this Ping G2 irons and 2,3,4, HL a 5...(4801)
Purchase: I paid $630 for the 3-PW and had to buy the 2HL separately for $100.
I was playing the Titleist DCI 962's for 13 years. I was debating on a regular set of cavity backs (like the Ping's) or a set of blades or blade like clubs such as the Cleveland TA2's 5's 7's.
Felt like I wanted to hit more greens so went with the Ping's and am more than happy with my decision.
Pros: The Ping G2's are awesome. 2 weeks after I bought them I got my first hole in one with a 7-iron about 173 yards. The key is on mishits I may still be on the green or green side without being 30 yards short if I hit it towards the heel or toe, or even thin, but obviously if I take it fat I'll still be short. I highly recommend the HL irons as well, I am a 7 handicap and traditionally a very good ball striker but these HL irons have made the ball hit the green and land softly, taking the fear away from carrying a hazard to a pin cut without much green behind. Cons: It is important to get the fitted to allow a full extension through the swing. My Titleist's were not fitted and I would break the left arm to compensate for the length of the club because the lie angle was too flat. (I'm 6'2") The fitting really freed up my swing allowing the ball to draw naturally without forcing a release of the clubhead.
Although the Ping G2's set up very nicely, the top line is very thick and does take time to get used to.
Hard to work the ball or hit knock downs with the HL, but not really a high concern of mine. Fairways and greens. Quality: Ping's in my opinion are like the luxury cavity backs. Very square, very forgiving with enough feedback. Love the almost prewashed look so that dings don't make that look so used like chrome clubs. Review Summary: No regrets on these clubs. I wouldn't trade them for any club on the market.
